3SGTE into 1990 Celica GT-R 4WS

Postby Chillage26 » Thu Jan 18, 2007 7:35 pm

Could someone please inform me as to whether a 3SGTE engine will fit straight into a 1990 Celica GT-R 4WS which currently has a 3SGE engine in it? Any help much appreciated. Thanks.

Yeah the mounts and stuff will bolt up so will the gearbox.

glhf on loom and ECU management and intercooler.
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

There are a few 3sgte powered celicas that used to be FWD NA and are now FI FWD so it has been done rather well before, but as pointed out good luck on the ECU side of things etc

to be brutally honest - FWD and turbo in a celica = fast in a straight line - but traction isues in the wet - seen this with a good friends RC powered St184 - Blindlingly quick in a straight line but terrible to steer , compared with my St185 Gt4 at the time

For the cash you have to put into the swap - unless you plan on doing all the work by yourself , you would most likley be able to pick up a good condition St185 over here , that has the chassis , brakes , and bodywork designed to run around it - and also the platform to go onto bigger and better things

I dont know if its easier over here or not $ wise but in oz , weve pretty much come to the conclusion , its better value for money at the end of the day , just to get a St185 , then build upward from there

Have a good think before attempting the conversion , if the moneys actually worth the end result ..

I had a ride in Jool's car (I think that's the guy who I sold the headgasket to), all it did was wheelspin throughout the first few cogs.

yeah if you want a fwd turbo its probly smarter to use a smaller displacement engine. 3sgte makes a fair bit of torque and i can imagine it would have huge difficulties using any power.

a 1.6 or 1.8 fwd turbo setup will still have traction issues, but there are LSD diff's more easily available to help put the power down and the torque figures arent as high.

lol don't knock a fwd 3sgte till you have driven one... in the dry they are fine in the wet there not, if u have a lsd they are fine if u dont they arnt. in about 2 months when my new shead is made ill be starting to rebuild the curren from the ground up, its aim is 10's and befor people start ranting about how much thats going to cost and how it wont happen, they can sit back in there stock cars and just watch it happen just watch out for engine mounts flying >_< i have 10grand to spend on the engine parts all machine work and fabrication work will be done in house free tuning/wiring free not to mention i have a full fibreglass shop at my disposal for carbon fibre. just need the space to work on it lol.

I dont have to many traction issues at the moment (though im only running low boost) and the handling side of things is awsome for a fwd car, i dont think they are terrible to steer at all, ive driven a gt4 185 and personally think my st202 sticks to the ground pretty dam well. i spin in the wet but my tires are pretty av and i havnt got my lsd yet, fwd 3sgte's are fun i thnk you should go with the 3sgte idea in you're celica, keep the non turbo bonnet and supprise people 8)
