Top Kiwi race driver in prison?

Postby snwtoy » Sun Jan 21, 2007 4:50 pm

Is this for real? Race driver steals to fund adrenaline addiction? (sorry if it's a repost).

Thats a shame tho, but i guess the racing is like an addiction youd do anything to get a fix comment is rather true.. Im sure were all slightly guilty of the same type of thing on a much smaller scale.

The person in question runs in the Toyota series, he ran a toyota last season & for two or so seasons before that he ran Formula Ford. He's from Wellington & he has previosuly be named in the Herald, Auto Action & Australasian Motorsport News.

I know who he is & to be honest when I first read about this probably a month ago I was shocked as he's one of the nicest guys I've ever met in Motorsport & his parents are very supported of his motorsport & are bell well respected people with a lot of knowledge.

All I can say is he isn't the first & won't be the last person either here or elsewhere in the world that has resorted to crime to pay the bills.

I'm glad it's not who I thought it was then, but still that's a very sad thing to hear.

Yeah I heard that a few weeks back too, and was told the name but not one of the drivers I recognise.

Was a TRS driver and was missing from the grid at The Lady Wigram Round when I was there too.

good to see the people of toyspeed have common sense, last time something like this came up on rotahavik everyone mentioned the guys name which could've landed any of them in a fair amount of trouble with the cops...

so if he is going to be named, I would do it via PM. just a warning to all... :D

As people have said not the first and not the last time this will happen.

One of the guys driving in F3 when my father was race engineer turned out to be involved in a spate of wage van hijacks.

He was the getaway driver :D

They always wondered how he had the best gear available....

irony is that he was quoted in an interview in the Speedsport magazine as having 'secured extra funding ' to have a real good crack at the TRS champs.

poor fella. was definetely a driver progressing well in the sport.

Turned out it was exactly who I thought it was. Maybe it wasn't so good that TVNZ promoted his huge step up in the series from using second hand tyres last season to being a front runner this season, but how were they to know?

Anyone else think this is going to do even more damage to the NZ Motorsport scene? Bloody NZ seems to be anti-motorsport, and I'm damn sick of it, especially because of the money it can bring in, but of course people can't have their sunday meditation interrupted with a bit of engine noise a few times a year  (referring to Hampton Downs and the proposed Nelson Motorsport Park....)
