Easiest way to remove a GT4 engine...

After spending several hours battling with the ST205 in the weekend. I would like others methods on removal of the 3SGTE in a ST. I think considering the task it should be a FAQ item.

I'm certainly going to weather pack connector the Link engine loom and put jointers where more appropriate. Which should make things slightly more knuckle friendly. I'll have to pull this engine at least once a season so any pointers on keeping it quick would be appreciated.

Your gonna have to drop the engine and gearbox out, i belive malcom tryed to remove it while it was in the car but found it very hard. Or have i miss understood this?

sounds like hes already removed it and just wants peoples different opinions on the best way to do it?
theres always different ways to do things, and surely someone will have some tips/secrets that are helpful.

this is normaly the easyest way failing that they have to come out with box unless you have way to much pashents & want it to take 3 times as long

In my ST165 I managed to pull the engine out with engine host with gearbox and transfer case attached, I had to remove radiator and bumper and rotate the whole thing to funny angle to take it out.
I think if you have access to a hoist (car hoist not engine "crane") it would be easier to unbolt whole subframe and drop it down while lifting the car up. Thats how they (car factory) put engines in first place (through bottom).

yeah i've just taken my 4age out, not quite the same, but we found trying to take it out of the top it kept going on funny angles so we just took off the north/south crossmember ( on a 4age you also need to loosen of east/west to get the rear engine mount out of the north/south ) lowered the engine through the bottom then used a forklift to pick the front end up and dragged the sucker out lol. not sure if this was the best way to do it but it worked in the end...

At pickapart we managed to drop the whole subframe with crossmember, struts and hubs and engine with gearbox still attached to it and drag it from under the car and on to pathetic hoist-like contraption they had available.

I pulled mine out through the top using an engine crane. Its not easy, but I think it would be easier than pulling the sub-frame (which I did anyway).
Disconnection of the loom was a byatch, ran into all the small crevices of the engine, the knock sensor and one block earth were stupidly placed and fused to the point where I had to snap the connectors.
Once I tidy up the loom, remove the ABS, some of the fuse boxes and the battery mount it should be considerably easier to complete an engine out.

The easy way is to use a two pillar hoist. Believe it or not the engine and gearbox (which you don't separate in the car unless really stupid) drop out very easy using a block and tackle, but the car must be dead level. If not level you will end up fighting with the engine mounts, firewall, steering rack etc etc.

Last time I did this the two of us had the clutch and flywheel out 2-1/2 hours after driving the ST165 into the workshop.

If you use and engine crane and lift the car over the engine you are in for a world of trouble, as I have learned too many times...

Leave the loom on the engine, disconnect it from the ECU, not difficult.

I'm gonna agree with most of the previous posts, I've taken the engine and box out of my GTZ from the top and it was a prick, so next time around i tried the other way. Dropping the engine and subframe onto the ground and then lifting the car up is definitely the easiest way to do things.

in the curren i drop it in and out thru the top, takes me about 3 hours to take out and put back in :p ive had some practice lol and i do it by my self on a engine crange

i can do it in a hour with a jack and axel stands.....
its putting in that takes me 4 hours to get it in and running

You dont have to deal with a transfer case and driveshaft out the back do you :P :P

When mine comes out (in the next week) i'll be dropping it to the ground and lifting the car up.

The way that worked for me (which only took me two hours) was using a two post hoist unclicking the complete wiring loom off the engine, removing the power steer pump and leaving it there, unbolting the tail shaft section of the transfer (the bit containing the pinion shaft), undoing the cross member removing the exhaust and droping it out onto a table with castors trust me i have done it this way several times at work as well on other celicas and v6 4wd estimas (2000+)

i always drop toyota FWD's out of the bottom, with models with a simple crossmember for the gearbox it takes maybe an hour from fresh start to engine sitting on the floor. GT4's and caldinas are a mission because of the AWD. but still drop out the bottom for sure

And for A series engine owners out there they are so easy that its hard to complair to pulling a 3S etc

Ive been strugling with a sr20 det in a gtir pulsar for the past week.....

THATS a mission...


Another one for the dropping 3sgte out the bottom with the whole subframe.

st185 it was, and it took two of us about 3 hours (nethier of us had working on a celica or a 3sgTe before).

Haha, i managed to drop my 3SGTE out the bottom without an engine lifter :lol:. Left the subframe in, gearbox attached and just lowered the whole car onto the ground. Undid the mounts, then raised the car and dragged it out. Wasnt that hard considering its my first engine drop!
