Going back to the Cavalier - I had the (dis)pleasure of driving one for a few weeks. The engine wasn't exactly gutless but it wasn't poweful either. For a 2.4L it had a bit of poke, managed to get a wheel going a couple of times. The general build quality is crap, the interior more so. The steering would make a creeking noise, and the suspension was just generally filmsy.

The one I drove was a 2001 facelift model so it looked a bit better than the earlier models. It had good features such as remote central locking, factory alarm, traction control, all electrics (which will probably crap out) etc.

The windscreen did get a crack in it, but luckily the car was insured. Even so the price of windscreens for the Cavalier have come down now to around $400 as they make aftermarket items now.

All in all it's not a bad car for the price and year, but not entirely good either. I don't hear of them breaking down all the time, just that the windscreens and water pumps are expensive.

Another bonus(?) is they started turning up at wreckers yards pretty early for their age.
My mate used to sell them almost like hot cakes, and was always happy they sold lol

Still lots of cars with a cam chain on the market. I wouldn't hold that against it lol

Though knowing the Cavalier, the cam chain is probably softer than most belts

theres one of those things on chch with bolt on flares and hideous wheels that dont need flares
its awesome

I saw a 4 door one in manukau, was looking rather unhappy parked in a turn lane with only 3 wheels.

Funny thing was the wheel was about 200m up the road, and looked fine, untill the truck next to me ran it over. Made some bad crunching sounds too.

Though, not really the cars fault if you don't tighten the wheel nuts.

Family had one of these. Just felt very cheap, interior etc. Tried to find info on it when I started getting into cars and found all the bad info on it. Traded it in.
