Only reason Subarus die at the track is oil starvation...how many have you heard coming into the pits with that death rattle going on?
Come to think of it, I've seen equal amounts of Evo's coming in knocking on death's door as I have Slowbarus :D

ahhh yep.

he also did ferrari ones too... so yeah i should have realised lancia!

most sucsessful in competiton is a hard one..... has anyone added them up?
i mean theres the cosworth DFV, 4age, the above eyetie jobby etc.
be interesting to look into. then theres the 350chev, ford windsor series.

yeah more dead group N mitsis than subbies. evo 9 appears rto have some major cooling issues.

corolla diesel is the c series, 1c or 2c. not 1300 though... theres the N diesel which is about 1300 iirc. but thats a starlet engine.

350chev has got to be way up there, as much as anything else for the range of competition they get used in. Track, offroad, boats, drag racing, you name it - there are 350 Chevs in there representing and have been for decades.

Yep, the 350 is a goodun. We had one sitting in the garage for about 10 years, unstarted. The carb was a bit buggered, but we poured a bit of gas down it and got it to fire up within a few cranks.

Parts for them are CHEAP too.
Ours was in an XJ6 Jag. For the price of 1 piston for the original AJ6 engine, you could get a whole set of pistons AND rings for the 350!
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

What about Evo 4g63...

But I'd also probably say 4age, this is not a biast vote as I have only had one for a very short amount of time compared to others.. (4g63, sr20 etc) They take such a thrashing and you can get so much power out of them for such a small motor.

What a fantastic idea for a poll :D

I voted for the SR20 as it's fundamental design is great - square bore/stroke, rod-stroke ratio close to optimum, flat-ish included valve angle, timing chain and an incredibly stout bottom end - even the lowliest of the lowly DE's have forged & shotpeened pistons / rods / cranks as standard. The only weak link is the cam/rocker setup - too prone to blocking the oilways if oil changes are neglected, and the single rocker for 2 valves setup isn't great for high-rpm valve float. They sorted that on the VVL version though.

2nd, I'd put the 4AGE. Everything that I would say on it has already been said. A great fundamental design that needs bugger-all oil to keep going under conditions of serious abuse.

3rd, Suzuki's GSX1300R Hayabusa engine. A 1300 that will happily put 300KW to the ground on factory internals, with just a bolt on turbo kit? Crazy titties!

4th = The 2JZ & the larger RB's. Powerpowerpowerpowerpowerpowerpowerpower.

5th - 3SGE/GTE's. They're very similar in the basic design to the SR20. But for some reason don't seem as reliable, particuarly in the head. Maybe it's related to the cooling issues of the SW20's?

And just to throw a curveball in there, Honda's H22A. Another 4 banger with an incredibly stout bottom end. Just a pity they made it so under-square, as it's got the valve-train to rev highly.

Having worked on 4G63 & '93's, all I will say is that they're easy to work on :P

SR20DE's DO NOT have forged pistons and rods from factory, ive stripped down 4 at work for scrap and they have cast run of the mill pistons. Even doing a HG on a GTIR, the factory pistons didnt appair to be forged. SR engines are pure sluts to work on in the FWD/4WD config!

Sorry, got the info on the pistons wrong. SR20 pistons are pressure die cast, not forged.
The rods & crank in all SR20's are definitely shotpeened, forged steel.

And yes, they're cn*ts to work on in a transverse layout! You need to have a hand the size of a cellphone to be able to adjust the drive belts :roll:

I'll second that! The FIAT twin cam. Designed by Lampredi, a former Ferrari F1 engine designer.

With a 30 year life span (1966-1996). Id say it would be the most sucessfull rally engine ever. I think the first rally car it was used in was a Fiat 125 in 1968. It of course ended its competitive life under the bonnet of a Lancia Delta Integrale in 1994.

Yep, your certainly right there! Already had to do the alternator on mine once, don't think I will be buying another transverse SR motor :?

go the 16v 4age's, i've seen a bit of abuse taken by them, and i've given my fair share too, still give a reasonable amount of useable power and can take it.



on a side note what about the 4g12 mitsi motors?? We bricked one of them, half an hour later it dies, now that's testament to them

after hearing the numbers Keith was subjecting my engine to at D1nz Rd1, 3T for the win!!
he asked me where the shift lite was, i say 'don't worry, just keep revving till it valve floats'.
he was under strict intructions that if any part of the car was to fail, it had to be spectacular.....it didn't! 8)
even running the temperature needle right off the gauge didn't seem to phase it much , just poured plenty of water over the radiator to stabilise it :twisted:
just a shame i didn't have a tacho with recall :wink:
and why did all the other cars there have rev limiters :?
