Looking at buying a BZ Carib and need advice

Postby DR BO » Sat Feb 10, 2007 5:43 pm

Hi guys and girls,

Just looking at buying a Carib BZ Wagon and have seen a very nice example with only 88ks on the clock. It's a 96' so only has the 5spd but still has the Black Top 20v engine.

I am not a Toyota man but have set my sights on a Carib.

What should I look for in terms of common faults? I have heard the clutches are a bit prone to wearing out?

Is there any difference in the boxes besides the number of gears? Is the 5spd weaker/stronger?

Everything else though I have heard is mint - esp the engine.

I also see the price of Caldina GTT's down too so that is my second option.

Any advice, tips or warnings welcomed.

Cheers,

Matt

ive never heard anything about the clutches!?

i think the common opion is that the 6 spd is luxury, whilst alot of ppl will vote for the 5 spd being stronger!

who needs 6 speeds any way its just another gear change every time!

blacktops are a nice engine, looked after they are generally fine, but with high revving applications, the rods can sonmetimes find themselves poking outside the block.

have a search anyway.

good luck

I recently sold my 96 BZ touring 5 speed and I miss it. Clutch was starting to get a bit tired in it when I bought it but lasted 2 years and was still going strong. Personally I would prefer a 5 speed over the 6 speed. They are stronger to start with and have no issues where as I have heard a lot of negative things about the 6 speed box.

Apart from that, check for any oil leaks, my main seal was starting to leak and would have needed to be looked at in the next 18 months or so, I had to replace the rear suspension as it was sooooo soft, and then had an issue with the abs afterwards but that was due to the moron who changed over the suspension not doing things properly.

Generally though they are very reliable, never failed a wof and just kept going and going.

Good cars Matt

I'll be after one but probably an 1800cc and 4wd one when I return later this year. Either that or a Corolla wagon, Caldina or Hilux anyway as need something to tow my inflatable.

Are you just using yours as a daily driver? Keeping the GTR i presume!

The clutches in both are fine. Theres alot of levins out there so specify which one your bagging cos my mates levin has no clutch problems, has high km's and is worked pretty hard. Look after it, and youll have no problems.

don't get the 6spd, they are weak and in BZ-touring version would have no LSD and is a chance to have long ratios.

Thanks guys,

The one I am looking at has some King Springs in it from what I could see and sat fairly low but not too outrageous.

Glad to hear the clutches are okay and that the 5spd is the way to go. 6spd would just be a novelty to be honest.

Jade, not selling the red GTR but selling the white one (almost sold - guy is paying me off slowly) and need a new daily driver but want a really nice daily driver hehe. The Civic is dying and will shortly be used in a paddock :D

The only thing that worries me about the Carib I am looking at is the fact that it has been modded. It has mags (slightly curbed), extractors, exhaust. It has, though, only done 88ks and is in good condition apart from a couple of minr marks and scrapes.

Your a idiot.

Prove what you just said.

My FACTORY TOYOTA CLUTCH in my ae101 held a 4agte, 150kws, EASY. Absoultly no slip at all over the time I drove it, and i gave it death sometimes.

Back on topic, I wouldnt be toooo worried about it being modded (your link doesnt work so I can't see), blacktops are pretty strong, and as long as they arnt revved to hell they will last a long time. Theres no much you can do to them to kill them other than not change the oil etc.

Run it on 98 though, or play with timing.
