4AGE starting/running problems

Postby rwd_mayhem » Fri Feb 16, 2007 2:49 pm

4AGE bluetop, when i put it at TDC, crank mark at 0 degrees, and put the rotor arm at #1 - it WONT start at all just backfires out the intake. BUT if i make it so the piston is at the bottom (BDC?), crank mark at 0 degrees and put the rotor at #1 it will start fairly easy but just run like complete arse. any ideas? ive replaced plugs and leads, the rotor and cap are in good condition.

Go with option 2 and move the dizzy round till it goes ok. If the dizzy wont move far enough, then maybe you have it a tooth out.

option two is wrong. flat out wrong.

I would do option one, and then move the dizzy, if it doesnt go far enough, then its a tooth (or more) out.

you do realise that just because the crank pulley is at TDC does not mean that the engine it at TDC no 1 cylinder,
as it may be at TDC on no 4 cylinder.

you may have had it 180 deg out.

Either re do it at tdc again an if it doesn't go,
rotate the crank 360 so the rotor now points at no. 4
Then take out the dist and spin it 180 and refit.
Then it should go.

Or read this and do it by looking into the oil filler hole.

ok i had a screwdriver dwn the cylinder and made sure the piston was at the top, i also looked at the dimple on the cam, i have a manual so i didi it exactly how that picture says. i played with it more and it works at a random spot, the cambelt must of been replaced sometime and must be a tooth out.

Are you using the factory computer?
To set the timing...
Put a jumper wire across the correct connectors on the diagnosis plug (let me know if you don't have one that is obvious)
Make very sure that the throttle is completely closed - hold it closed if you need to. This is so the throttle position switch tells the computer it is closed. The little idle up bellows thing below the throttle stop tries to push it a bit open and so the computer won't spark at the right place so you can't set 10 degrees basic timing.
Also - the dizzy should be set to number 1 when the crank is at 10 degrees not 0.

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

Becuase it kind-of runs with option 2 it means he has something 180degrees out. So option 1 cannot work.

yes factory computer. go more in depth on the jumper wire bit please? i know what the diagnosis plug is but where do i put a wire? what are the correct connectors? i think the throttle is the tiniest bit open so ill have to force that closed next time.

Did a 30 second session using the search function.

See if these help you with the diagnostic function.
