I had the same question last year. As far as we could figure out it's an idle mixture adjust valve....

its not a Fuel Pulsation Damper is it ? (quickly flicked through the 1989 MR2 Manual)

bluemaumau - is it on the fuel line before before the pressure regulator ?? (was a bit hard to tell from those pics)

If you like I can burn the whole manual to CD & post to you, just PM me details

it doesnt have any direct fuel lines altho if memory serves me correct the small line tees off another line which runs from inlet->waxstat->blue vsv->abv.

edit:its the blue vsv

The fuel pulsator dampener is the thing that bolts onto the gearbox end of the fuel rail. There isn't a thread about the valves, it was more a case of my uncle and I sitting down and tying to figure out what the hell it actually was, and yeah, adjustable idle blah blah blah......

Then of course we may be completely wrong! :P

Yep. In fact you can get rid of whole valve/solenoid mumbo-jumbo and plug the hoses at the source (don't do a U one into another, if you do, put ballbearing inside the hose so it blocks the flow, just use big enough so it will not go into inlet).
