That sounds a bit unlikely...most insurance places will give you a grace period before canning your insurance once it lapses.
I insured my 1st RX7 with NZI, cost something like $1200. It got stolen about 5 months later, and they paid up, albeit it after 2 months in case it surfaced.

Best thing I ever did was to insure all of my stuff through FMG (it pays to be a country boy every now and then) I'm paying about $350 a year for full cover on my 98 Carib. Excess is pretty low too. Guess that's one of the perks of being an old(ish) fart.

They also cut me a pretty good deal on my house and contents insurance.

AND they pay out for stuff other companies won't even look at - I lost two computers to power surge after a lightning strike, they didn't even bat an eyelid, just gave me a claim number and told me to get them fixed.

Im with AMI and never had a problem - I deal with 1 guy in one of the stores, and yea, I have a 60% no claims bonus , lost my licience due to tickets, have a fully decked out show car, mags, paint, custom interior, at least 3/4k worth of sounds , new paint blah blah and i only pay $40 a month for full cover :D - aggreded value of 12k and with a 1k access ohh im 24 btw :D so go AMI, never had a problem with them

And they also let me put on tempery drivers when i go on long road trips :D yay

My car fell thru some silly loophole with being supercharged...
Only paying $42 bucks a month full insurance, lowered with wheels.
I told them it was supercharged and they kept asking me "is it turbo?" I said it similar but different from the factory...

as long as its factory
ok she says, Ill give you 20V premium. :D

I made a point of getting her to type it on my policy...

Its the late nite munters who "waaaaapiiiissshh" thru town that make it hard for decent people to own turbo cars....

I tried to get a VR4 a couple of years ago and go accidently approved somehow, they rung me a few hours later to say a mistake was made...

I know a girl who had trouble insuring a 1.5 nana VTEC car, pays more than I do for insurance too. Kinda like explaining turbo diesel to insurance people. My Dads truck cost him more than his 2.5TT Soarer

Yeah State are wankers, I prefer AMI. However it is their money and they can insure who they like haha. Sounds like you proved their excess amount to be correct!

Bad luck about writing the car off though, what'd you do?

For the record I was with AMI until I crashed my AE82; They wouldnt touch me as a Teenager with a 3SFE Powered Celica ("Sports Car" == no no).

After I turned 25 they quoted me for the Caldina, which was much the same as i'm now paying Lumley through a broker (though i'm up for renewal again in 3 months, and will be shopping around).

I have found NAC very easy to deal with but havn't made any claims yet.

Also everytime I make a change or call I get them to mail me a copy of the notes they made in case the claim turns to shit.

I'm with AA Insurance, haven't made a claim yet but assume it would be pretty easy. Three months ago I went in to the store to insure my car, they looked in their "black book" and said they wouldn't insure my car unless I was over 25. Rang them the other day for a quote over the phone and they decided to insure me :D . I've been with pretty much every insurance company under the sun. Lumley, Ami, Aa, Nac, Insure direct, state.

Ami and Aa come first for me in aspects of customer service, Insure Direct comes last!

About to find out with my Commodore getting nicked a few weeks ago.
Got insurance thru ASB, which is IAG I think.
Over the years I've had to replace the camshaft and shocks,(also changed the springs at the same time), due to wear and tear, but I didn't use Holden factory parts, also did the work myself, so now thay are saying my car is modified and they will have to think about it...

You guys have to realise with companies such as NAC and Insure direct ETC even you have your car insured for 5k or what ever they will only pay out what ever is smaller, market value or your insured value.

For myke30 corolla market value is 1,000. So there is no point in insuring it at all apart from third party as i will only get 1,000. I could insure it for 10,000 and pay a shitload but if something happened id only get the market value.

You need your car insured for fixed value, especially the ones with older heavily modified cars.

I went through a broker and ended up with AMP for my MR2.
Called my broker when I crashed and I hadn't even paid anything as I had only had it for 3 weeks (yeah yeah... I suck) but he hooked me up and the insurance company paid up pretty quickly.

I then bought a Mazda

This is true across the board - in a nutshell this is how insurance works. Check the fine print of your insurance policy, but in general every agreement i've seen has the payout as being agreed value or market value, whichever is the lesser of the two. Unless you have particularly arranged something different...

I'm with AMI, it costs me $163 a year in insure my GTR Corona for 3rd party fire+theft. Exactly the same as what I was paying on my other 4 door 3sfe Corona so I'm not complaining.
