Legalites RE Body Damage

Postby Adydas » Sat Mar 24, 2007 6:49 pm

Hey guys

Want some help anyone know what the dealiio is with pannel damage..

I just bought a work hack thats had a side swipe. Somones replaced the doors and front pannel the backs a tad naffed ( ill get pics later ) and the lights gone but i can replace that.

But the bottom door sil has been bent over slightly i certainly wouldnt call it hardout damage but its still enuf to raise suspicion.

Anyone know the " law ", as it drives fine, indicates fine, turns allright, needs an alignment as it has a slight pull to the side but overall its all good except for the body damage.

The deal with warrants etc? If the chassis isn't damaged and the structural strength of the vehicle isn't any less, and there are no projections that could catch a pedestrian and be called dangerous then chances are its alright. If thats what you're thinking of, check the VIRM online

If

Postby andyztouring » Sat Mar 24, 2007 7:10 pm

If it has more than 25mm inwards damage on the sill it will require repairs as required by the repair certifier(sp),may require sill by removed and replaced, and done by a panel repairer.Has the car been dereg`ed,if not it will be easier.

When I bought my AE82 it had sill damage which prevented it from getting a wof. A previous owner jacked up one side on the sill bending it quite badly

Anyway got a panelbeater to use his machine to pull the sill back down which he did fairly cheaply. I did a bit of tidying up afterwards and didn't have any wof problems in the future.

I think im going to do the Above ^^^^ anyway, to befair i consider the car a write up after its 4 months of current wof expire and for $400 bucks its only $25 a week Plus gas, Plus it has spare wheels ( so 8 x wheels ) with near new tyres i can sell to get most my cash back.

But IF i could keep it as a work hack for longer ( ie when i get my car back in the next 3-12 weeks ) that would be extra primo.

Ill add some pics.

Woah, that pretty bad aye.

You'll wanna see a panel beater about that one. Especialy the sill, the rear pilar isn't too much an issue if you pulled it out a bit.

Just fill it in with bog, she'll be mint
Nah the front part of the sill will probably cause it to fail, I had similar to the rear part in the sill of my RX7 and that never had an issue with WOF's. Could always buy a Porirua Universal Car key (aka slide hammer) and fix it yourself.

It's easily doable, just make sure you bog it up real good. It'll take a while though.

To start with, take off the door sill trims, there should be some holes going along there, if there isn't drill some. Put a big punch, or a old socket extention in and start bashing it out. If you can't get it good enough, then try a slide hammer, but you might not need to.

The slide hammer will help pull out the rear though.

imo, it could be fixed & I'd do as Zak suggests above.
However, Its going to be a shitload of work to make it look half decent. From the photos, even boging the sill and pulling around the light, the whole side if the car still looks pretty beat up. If the door fitament could be improved it would turn out a little better...but can it be? $$$wise, imo its not worth the hassle and time.

I'd run it till you get your car back on the road, and then sell. if you still want a work hack then shop around for something a little more tidy. ~$500 can get something requiring less work, which gives you more time for your real car.
just my 5c anyway :)

As for getting a WOF-0%,as for repairing ,that depends on your panel repair abilities, really needs a replacement sill and rear quarter, what is the car ? A Mazda 121/ford Festiva? is it.

Yeah its a festiva, i had a call about my car on Thursday so progress must be been made.. So chances are ill only need it for a week or so then i might flick it surly tardme has some pannelbeaters that could fix it up.. When fixed im sure its worth a wee bit..

Ill play it by ear, do nothing for a month and go from there.. Cheers for the advice.. Tad mixed up as its a " with work you could do it " as well as a its not worth it at all.. So ill see how i go.

I think i'd be going for a small fiberglass kit for the sill, unless you own a bog company 8O add some "filler" fiberglass mat over that, then bog over that, might save time/money.

Thats one beat up lookin car

Dude I don't reckon its worth it. $500 can get you a better car for sure. It's just not worth the hassle in the end.

Those cars are pretty much only worth $1000 in good condition anyway.
