Mr2 turbo gearbox.. crunching! rebuild????

Postby 92mr2paddy » Thu Mar 29, 2007 7:23 pm

ok,, 3rd crunches at high boost 4k plus, crunhces like a ***** changing down. 4th pops out of gear randomly when changing up from 3rd, does this about once every 50times gear changed.

its a gen2 3sgte turbo gearbox,

i dont realy want to buy a replacemtn one, around $400 and get it put it as this may start doing da same soon!

i would go for a complete rebuild of the gearbox so i know it will be strong for the rest of the time i have the car, can anyone give me a price range, ive heard up to 2grand?? also im in waikato and i would like to know of a place that does a GOOD job and doesnt fuk you around like most people ive been to,

cheers pat

Last time I bought my box it was $650 from the wreckers.

GLHF.
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

Mainstreet transmissions quoted me $400 for a rebuild if I already have the synchros etc. I have a 3S-F so it would be about the same I guess. Best bet IMO:

2nd hand gearbox with current gearbox take it in and get em to do it.

2nd hand gearboxes as complete replacements are FAIL. I have one at the moment cos I had a busted 4th gear synchro. Now it's fine but I have 2nd and 3rd that are shot :P

It may not be the gearbox, especially if it's a '92+ car (Chassis# > 0059266) as they had the revised synchros, which don't usually give problems.

Other common causes of shifting issues on MR2's are, worn bushings on the shifter cables, and stretched shifter cables. These would also account for it popping out of gear. Another possibility is the clutch master or slave cylinder, though that's a lot less common and shouldn't cause it pop out of gear.
