4AGE into Ford Anglia

Postby Flannelman » Sun Apr 01, 2007 5:12 pm

To start, its a 105e model built in 1967. Escorts replaced them a few years later.
They are rear wheel drive and weight a "mear" 750kg.
They came with 30hp and did the 1/4 in more or less 20 seconds....

SO out with 30hp and in with 130hp standard silvertop. Running gear is covered but stuck on front suspention.
Importing stuff from pomgolia isnt cheap (sooner put new school technology in it) and since i have a Toyota parts upgrage is the preferred choice.

The idea is to mount the steering rack (faster than the 5.5 turn lock-to-lock steering box and far superior steering feel) and front struts from a AE101.
BUT the stub axle (think its called this, the part where the wheel beering is, the brakes get bolted to) is front wheel drive so its got a hole in the middle for a driveshaft. The bolt that holds the wheel beering in is connected to the driveshaft. They are not needed now as it rear wheel drive car.

Besides plasma cutting the front splines off the driveshafts and using them to hold it all together (is this legal??), is there any other alternative by using either DX, Starlet, Cressida, Supra, Altezza that will fit the AE101 Struts?

This hasnt been done before so there isnt much point pouring in sackfulls of cash into it if it just doesnt work. The idea is to get it rolling and see if it has potential as cheaply as possible. Then get serious when it scares hell out of me.

Any help will be apreciated, cheers

i dont think the ae101 is a good donor
the rack will mount in about the middle of your gearbox!
i reckon a kp60 starlet or ke70 corolla would be a better donor
i reckon the kp would have a rack more the length u need.

the other issue which you prob already know is the dizzy location of the silver top.

If you haven't seen it already, you might like to check out Phil Bradshaw's page on his aborted attempt to fit a 4A-GZE into an Anglia.

Id be inclined to go with Rev heads idea of the KP60 parts
compare the anglia crossmember to the kp starlet one- if thats no good then you could fit the kp rack to the anglia crossmember- as for front struts id be more inclined to try fit the ae85/6 units as they run a separate caster arm where both the anglia and the kp starlet use the sway bar as the caster arm- a little more work fabbing up brackets to mount them too but well worth it.

yes very good point! but its more the bottom arm involved in that so keep that in mind when chosing lower arms

other cars to look at would be the rwd celicas and carinas

youll want some good brakes, the ke70 and ae85 have the same set up, non vented discs, where as the others have vented.
so ae86 (hard to find) or #a6# series cars may be a bit easier to track down

hopefully all that helps, will be a damn cool car
hope you keep us updated with pics etc as it progresess! :D

if i could learn how to upload a photo id show what i got so far.

but yea, the idea is to use readly avalible parts to build what is needed. and with those ideas i can move abit further. my experince with those parts is limited, so please keep them coming!

Thanks for the encouragement

Myself and Ezy10s prepped many an Anglebox.

Last ones being 300hp PP 12A orange one, a turbo vanglia and other variations.
4age will go in no prob. Dont chop the firewall, theres alot of strength in them in these old suckers. They are easy to overbrake so dont get to bigger ideas. I ran MkII cort front struts/capri slotted discs/austin 4pot calipers and 9inch escort rear drums rear with boosted RX4 master (all bolt on mods, no fab work!) Balanced very well and PLENTY of brakes for it. Original diff will actually handle a fair bit due to lightweight and lack of traction. They are soggy sacks and benefit greatly from a 6 point cage.
A good front end will actually steer well and quite light, just bang in a steering quickener if you want to keep it easily pointing in the right direction. Adapting Toyota gear would be great, but can easily ruin some i mportant geometry there...
You will find a FWD inlet manif will work better in the engine bay. Sort some good swaybars, it will fall over otherwise.
You will have to lose the tunnel to fit any sort of reasonable gearbox in, Just the way it is.
I was able to pull mine down to 695kg with 12A and no fibreglass, 4age should be same. When you do the maths, they go pretty good:)

Hope this helps, good luck!
