Sending car parts across the country?!

Postby DB4G63 » Tue Apr 10, 2007 6:43 pm

Hey All

Im not really sure where to post this, but its non technical and should be simple to answer.

What is the best way to get a set of struts and springs from the lower South Island to the North Island.

I weighed the heaviest struts ( the fronts) and the weigh 11kg, so fronts and backs combined wouldnt weigh any more than 40kgs...

I rung Courier post and they told me $134 dollars!! and thats only for the fronts ( 22kgish..) and i would need to send the rears too!

Courier post recommended shipping companies, they said it starts about $300 ( since you have to purchase a cubic meter)

Am I missing something here? Im sure there must be a cheaper way!!
thanks! :D

yeah i've used main freight to post big things.

I've sent struts via nzpost tho before, Was only the front ones tho, but they sent them as 2 items. Cant remember the exact cost tho so go here:

http://www.nzpost.co.nz/Cultures/en-NZ/ ... ticParcels

Main freight will probably be your best bet tho, i'd hazard a guess at $75

I sent some ae82 struts and springs, fronts and rears, from auckland to welly for $34, I just had to put them in 2 boxes and send them like that, as I think there is a weight limit of 30kg ?? or 25kg??

if we were sending them, or organising a pick up for them we'ld use Mainfreight. we send 90+% of our car parts out the door on couriers.

Freightlines are also good. Picked up a pallet with my 17s and TRD springs on from my work and delivered it to Napier for $130 incl.

Have used PBT for some heavy 17's welly-->aux, and mainfreight for some 16's from dunedin-->aux. PBT was door-to-door, and mainfreight was depot-to-depot. Both were efficient.

You need a business account for PBT.

CourierPost limit to one box is 25kgs (or as big as a courier can carry) and can be pretty pricey. But then if you only have small stuff Mainfreight, like above, you need to pay for a minimum :)

It pays just to ring around everyone and get the best price for what you are sending (but just remember the best price doesnt mean the best service)

try post-haste,
at my old job as a storeman we could send 25kg and .05m3 to the south island for $10, so joe public should be able to for about $15

.05m3 is about the size of a steel wheel + tyre

Mainfrieght will do door to door, or at the very least, depot to the recepiecnt's door. But you need an account with them for that.

Ended up getting a quote for $110 bucks for $35kgs with about 0.3 cubic meter, however this was just an estimate....
this was depot to depot cash Dunedin to Palmeston North.

Still waiting to see if they guy is still keen.

Seems like quite alot, but they are fairly solid...
