Just out of curiosity why did they change from 3.0 l single turbo to 2.5 l twin turbo ??

Im pretty sure it was just pre-devlopment for the JZA80 mk4 Supra. The M series was quite old and I think they decided to go another route for the Mk4 Supra.

They probably saw them as a problematic engine due to the dummy in the head meets block design department playing 'Pin the tail on the torque number we'll use for the head bolts out of the factory'

yes the 7m was the last in the line of the M series engines, so had more research to improve it, but it was also a very old initial design to begin with. all it was was another variant of the M engine. the JZ series engine was as much of a leap forward over the 7m as the 7m was over the 5m (and i know you've had both matt so you know that difference). yes you can get similar power figures out of each engine when you start to throw money at it, but to start off with the jz makes more power out of the box, the first gains are very easy, and the later gains are a lot more stable for less money spent.

i've owned both a ma70 and now a jza70, and i have to admit, i deeply enjoyed them both. i think that's more cause i have always liked the *a70 supra from when they were first released, so didn't really care what powered it. the biggest thing i've noticed between the two? maintanance. since buying the jza70 all my money has gone into upgrades, i haven't had to fix anything. on my ma70 i had the headgasket replaced, new turbo twice, exhaust, 2 trans, afm, piping galore, plus normal on road costs. and it didn't go any faster in 3 years. the jz's up to 240rwkw and climbing and thats on probably about $500ish spent on upgrades?

end of the day, treat them right, and both engines will serve you well, my pick is the 1j, other people's is on the 7m, each to their own.

to answer your original question, i think it was a change in technology, newer ways were coming out, so why not use them.

to be exact the inasual design was first drawen up in 1964 & the 5M was drawen up in 1973 but was not really projuced til 1980 but & the eletrics were taken of a model that they had in 1971 (the 2 plug ECU) the 3 plug one was desingen some were arround 1982 (cant find it in this book but its here some were) just to show how old the design of the beast is

age hass nothign to do with hp putput
bda's have been around for years and years and still put 4ages to shame
mostly in the way they sound...
perhaps a old mustang motor from a plane

technolagy is cool ..but just because there neer it dont automatically mean there better

most the t4's out there still have teh same blade design from the 1940's
the resently gave tehm a tickel up hense teh new s series but the inprovement is marginal at best

so aside from teh facts presented that 7m's can happy make more hp than a 1jz i guess we consider the rest rumors ??
