Your thoughts on turbo timers?

Are they really worth it for a turboed car? I mean if they were essential don't you think the manufacturer would have put one on as a standard fitment?

The issue I have with them is that if someone breaks into your car, all they need to do is rip out the turbo timer and presto, they have the ignition wires!

So if you have a turbo car is it really necessary? I mean you can give the car a good thrashing out on the windys, but you generally cruise back through town. :idea:

waste of time in my opinion, i had one in my car, and it was good in 1 out of 40 odd occasions. so took it out and sold the thing

turbos these dads don't need a long time to spool down etc, espeically if you just drive like a nana for the last 1-500m from where your stopping.

so from me: i say no to them now

most alarms arent compatable with t timers anyways.

Just drive off boost for the last part of the drive... kinda like turning your stereo off before you get to a car park as not to draw attention.

Yup, they are dumb, unless you're screaming along, pull over and turn off your car straight away, there is no point. 99% of the time you're driving the last 2km home in surburbia streets where you shouldn't be boosting anyway :p

I found it handy to let my car warm up without the keys in it. I could alarm mine cos my dynatron has a turbo timer output.

Otherwise i dont use it, because i live down a shitty little gravel road, and you'd have a death wish to want to go more than 40k.

Thats why you get something with a box under the dash and the display bit separate. And if someone is breaking into your car with the intention of stealing then chances are its going to be gone either way.

There are plenty of things which aren't fitted factory to vehicles which many people think are needed. Comes down to a cost thing, does it really need one? Plenty of turbo cars without even a blow off valve, does it mean you need one?

I had a T/Timer in my GT4... it was nice to not have to think about it if I had to make a quick stop; but I only ever used 30s (lowest setting) unless I had really been pushing it.

My alarm worked with it fine, if you know youve got a T/Timer in mind when you get the alarm thats never a problem..

But I agree theres a perceived risk there, unless you can mitigate it (a good solution has been offered) its down to your driving habits, a little discipline can go a long way.

I can't help but think that jerks with 4 minute turbo timer cycles for their trip to the corner dairy are a little overboard, though...

A mate of mine ended up doing a trade a couple of years ago for a prelude down in Chch, The Prelude had an apexi turbo timer in it :lol:

I've seen a 4AGZE powered car with a turbo timer in it and a number of N/A cars :lol:

Oh and when my turbo 4AGE is done, I'm not going to bother with one. Just another pointless expense in my mind.

the apexi t.timer is marketed as turbo and N/A. wonder why you'd need one on a N/A. could it be for stainless steal headers? help to prevent cracking?

Just let the engine cool down slower i supose. Especially if you've just fanged it and your oil temps are high.

No point though imo.

yeah, even with mine being NA, when I park at work or home, I leave it idling for a 10 seconds or so, but nothing ages

if you maintain your car properly they're a waste of time, modern oil doesnt coke/burn to the turbo bearings. If my car didnt come with one i sure wouldnt go out of my way to install one.

I prefer the belt and braces approach to most things, so if/when I had/have a turbo'd car, it'll have a timer... mind you I'm also shopping around for an oil cooler for my NA corolla.
