E (3SGTE) series boxes are alot larger than S (3sge) series

couple of easy ones:
the 3sge box (s54) has brackets cast into it for supporting the shifter cables on the fwd versions, e153 does not
the e153 has a 4 bolt flanged plate covering the 'other' end of the shifter arm (where the fwd one usually goes in), whereas the s54 just has a large nut.

go to twobrutal.com and search for s54 e153 or something, some guy posted pics of 2 side by side on there

E series boxes all have a large PLATE type set up held in my 8 bolts/studs where the RH axle comes out of the box, S series boxes dont have that set up.

another test is to try picking the gearbox up. if weighs around 25kg its an S series box, if you struggle to pick it up, (or is weighs closer to a bag of cement) its an E series

S series boxes also have 6 or 8 bolts around the diff casing where the LH axle goes into the box
