Toyota 1990 MR2

Postby Rasker » Tue May 15, 2007 12:03 pm

Hi Folks,
What would the factory spec be for the hand brake to engage? 3 or 5 clicks?

My little beast keeps failing on the hand brake, and is adjusted each time back to 3 clicks, and 6 months later I'm stung with another adjustment.

SW20 Mr2's are proned to stretch/snap handbrake cables, so you might want to take that into account

Which one/ones usually stretch? Just the main one or the two going to the wheels too?

What about looking at a hydraulic handbrake solution? Is it doable on a MR2 and still road legal?

There has to be a better way then pulling half the car apart to change these cables.

*sigh* worse case what am I looking at for the cables? I got a quote of over 1k to replace just the front cable, which sounds a little over the top to me.

The 1K price was for mostly the labour involved, I can't get my head around that bit.

Ilam Toyota in CHCH reckons it was going to take removing the gas tank, the coolant piping and half a dozen other things just to replace the front cable hence the 1K figure, and that's before they start on the rear cables 8O

Then I ponder how they got to the figure of a K just to do the front cable?? That's nuts that's the sort of price that makes people want to flick the car off.

You don't have to drop the tank to replace the front. You can get to it without dropping the tank. Well i have anyway.

Dropping the tank would involve dropping the water lines yes? Which would be a complete c**t.

2nd'd, bought a cable from Revhead and did it by only taking off the plastic under covers... i ended up taking the seat out to get at the handbrake itself though....

the coolent lines are easy to remove, very easy. the biggest PINA about it all is bleeding the cooling system again and drop fuel from the tank, but if you do it when your nearly out of gas it'll be sweet. anyone with a basic set of tools, jack and stands, and a can-do attidude is more then capable of doing it themselves.

go somewhere else if you cant do yourself. I wouldnt say it has to be a 'toyota specalist' for a handbrake cable.
going hydraulic would cost you more and involve more labour. Never tried to road cert one, but Ive known of others with different cars.
Cant believe im still a member here.
