Can anyone shed some light on what age cars do not legally need rear seatbelts? IVe been told its all cars manufactured before January 1st 1975, but can anyone confirm this for me? Cheers

to be honest, that kind rule is shit, you should want to have rear seatbelts for your passengers, i wouldnt be suprised if they change it soon so all vehicles no matter what date need to have rear seatbelts

Some cars pre 1979 never had rear (or front) seat belts or anchorages fitted.

To retro-fit the belts in the rear usually requires a professional company/engineering to fit them and i believe they need to be 3 point lap/diagonal for the sides and lap in the middle. Structures usually need to be reinforced with plates along with many other things. At high costs.

In some circumstances i would fit them (ie: children travelling in the back or regularly carrying passengers) however the small amount of time most pre 79 cars get used and the even smaller amount of time someone travels in the back i guess is taken into account of in these regulations.

Does this mean if your in a car produced before 1979 you don't need a seatbelt on if ones not there?

ie, no middle seatbelt in the back seats but you can still have someone sitting there?

Correct, so if there's no seatbelts in the rear at all, you can still have 3 people in back, nothing the 5-0 can do about it

my 36 doesn't have seatbelts in the back but on the rego it says it is a 5 seater so i doubt you can have as many as you want in the back :S

I doubt most cops would push it unless it was dangerously unsafe, or you failed the attitude test
