What happens if my licence is suspended?
You're given a suspension notice by the Police, saying that the 28-day suspension of your licence takes effect immediately. You won't be able to drive home.

The police officer will take your licence from you. (You will have to surrender it immediately.)

What happens after the 28-day suspension period has expired?
If the Police handed your licence over to Land Transport New Zealand, your licence will be returned to you (unless it expired or you were disqualified from driving during the 28-day suspension period).

If the Police didn't hand your licence to Land Transport New Zealand, you'll have to apply for a replacement (it costs $31.10 and you'll need to show identification and evidence of your address).

If you haven't got your licence back in your possesion, then it's illegal to drive anyway.

Ring the AA Licensing centre 28 days after your license was taken off you and inform them that your 28 days are up.
They will ask you personal questions such as date of birth, middle name, address etc. Once they've done that, they will reinstate your license.
They will send you a temp license in the mail until you receive your proper license back.
You will be allowed to drive from the point you get off the phone with them, however if you are pulled over by a Police office, it will be treated in the manner as driving without your license, which is a $55 fine.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

Actually, I think you're right. It changed just recently, hasn't it?

$400 are you serious? That is a rather hefty jump from $55.

It's nothing to do with them not being arsed to do a check, it's to do with people providing false details, which is a lot harder to do with photo id.

BTW it's only $400 on a learner's or restricted licence. It's $55 for a full licence, though repeat offenders can get fined up to a maximum of $1000 if the court sees fit to do so ;)
