Labour costs

Postby Luke28 » Sun May 27, 2007 10:49 pm

Never had a clutch done before so just wanted to know roughly how much i would be looking at for labour. going to get clutch, plate, thrust bearing replaced and flywheel machined. and most likely seals.

Any advice will be great!!

Cheers -Luke

so are you buying all the bits first, or just going to ask for them all to be done?
Its been some time since I paid someone to do a clutch for me, but the last one I paid for (on an ae92 so basically same job)cost me ~$300 all up from a small shop. At the time, toyota quoted me ~$550 for it (clutch, flywheel skim, bearing)

my flat mate works at toyota in chch, they charge $70 an hour plus parts. another mechanic mate said its about 4-5 hours to do a FWD clutch, he works at a small garage and usually charge out at $50 an hour+

the last fwd clutch job i did (ae92 fxgt with silvertop 20v) cost me $200 in parts (new exedy clutch kit and second hand 20v flywheel) got the flywheel machined for free. i did the clutch in 5 hours. that was my first 20v clutch job and i mucked about some trying to find out the correct torque settings and had to go to repco to get some bits and pieces.

So realistically it took me 4hours to do. I would imagine a proper mechanic should be able to do it in 3-4 hours.

so yeah, times that by cost per hour

Thanks for the info guys. Gona buy the parts myself and take it to someone to do the work. Think Warick says toyota clutch kit is $200. just gotta get rear main seal. So ill just call around a few places and find a good price.

Cheers people!!!

I'm getting my clutch done in a few weeks time, got a quote for around $300. It's in South Auckland. I supply my own clutch, (thanks warwick) and getting the thrust bearing done too.

4 hours would be a fair time, can be done quicker but yea a workshop will always quote max amount, Ive done several 20valve clucths in around the 3 hour mark and i know PRYMAL can do them in even less.

Just be glad its not a euro...was talking to a customer who works for a Euro dealership today, their charge out rate is $80. He said one large dealership in Auckland charges something like $100+ per hour 8O
