Brake disc coversion help! spongy peadal

Postby samham » Sun Jun 03, 2007 8:03 pm

I have replaced the rear drum brakes on my ke25 with discs and calliper of te71, the car has brake bias adjustment fitted to. And pedal box.

they are all fitted and do stop the car but after bleeding 4 times the peddle almost goes to the floor, if you pump the pedal it it does go hard???

The calipers and pads seem to be fitted squarely, I operated the brakes on the discs and then tacked the brackets, so I'm guessing? its not a issue with that.

Am I missing something is there something that I need to change etc.

any ideas appreciated

cheers, sam

Right caliper on the right side?

If you got them around the wrong way you will have pockets of air in the top of the calipers that you can not remove with the bleed nipple.

Im pretty sure I have them on the right sides, but I will double check.

Was just thinking though I have mounted them parallel to the ground on top.

Do they need to be up down, at a right angle to the ground?

Could there possibly be a air bubble?

Maybe i could vacuum bleed them?

If the bleed nipple isn't at the top...
Undo one bolt and rotate caliper until the nipple is at the top,
If the pads are clear of the disk then put some wood or something to stop a piston popping out.
Bleed the brakes, then bolt the caliper back in the correct place.

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

Im assuming the master cylinder has enough capacity to operate the new brakes? (on some cars this has to be changed also)
Cant believe im still a member here.

check the disc runout (wobble) - if a disc is even slightly out of running true it pushes the pads/pistons back a bit causing more fluid/pedal travel to pump the pistons back out. If it happens with the car stationary then it is more than likely an air leak or bubble

does the ke25 have brake booster? what size master are you using? you may need to upgrade to the 13/16 master same as the te71/ae86

Just had a look today, I think? I have ruled out a air bubble, I did bleed them with the nipple at the top. No change.

There is a master cylinder for the back and one for the front from what I can see, just behind the pedals, and the bias adjuster changes the stroke on the cylinder push rod things, if that makes sense. There is no booster.

When looking at the brakes on one side closer today I did notice the inside pad that touches the piston does not seem to be touching the disc evenly? I'm not sure how this could be as the other pad is fine?

Thanks for your comments so far!
