Which surf's had the removable canopy?

I never realised that the Hilux Surf's in the mid 80's could have the canopy removed, unlike the later 90's ones which are fixed. Its pretty cool! lol

Can anyone confirm the years this model was made?

Wonder how legal it would be to drive with out the canopy? Not like it would be structural!

I'd keen to turn it into a ute....cheaper than buying an actual ute. Weird how hilux's hold their price but Surfs dont

if you get one, make sure its the 84 to 86 LN60 - came with the beam axle front, which is much better offroad than the ln61 which had IFS, though the ride is a tad more rough..

i drove mine many times without the canopy on, never had issues with the cops with it, the seat belts are mounted to the canopy, as they are lap belts in the back.

oh yeah..dont bother with the 2lt versions, if you choose too, check if its had any cooling issues, if not, be prepared to shell out for a new engine, or at least a new head, though fitting larger exhaust and a better radiator will help prolong the destruction of the mighty 2lt, mine lasted about 6 months of serious thrashing off road, before i blew it going up the nauranga gorge

3Y is almost bullet proof, much like the f series engines in the landcruiser..
have a decent amount of torque too,

2L-T = 2.4 diesel with shit cooling.

2ltr petrol = decent, but still gutless as with the 2.4td.

the 2L is def more gutless! Been offroading in one a few times with mates minus the canopy good times.

get the 2.4 turbo, ditch the turbo,fit sc14 and better radiator

meh, my 2.4d didnt have much trouble off road, on road though it was gutless, all depends how you drive it and with decent tyres

the 2L petrol one my mate had years ago went well enough & it got thrashed, plus we sunk in the creek down the old tawa / j'ville road (read water over the top of the bonnet & sitting for ages). The only thing that really stopped it was half a bumble bee in the air intake

oh and the battery ripping out of its mounts on one of our "boys" are bored trips

Other than that it never missed a beat & was constantly being used to move furniture or as a tow wagon
