OK so I saw a 2L petrol with 233k's on it. Are these engines likely to handle that sort of km's?

What sort of price would a 2nd hand 2L or 2.4d go for?

I'd prefer the 2L petrol to be honest, less $&#$% around with RUC etc.

makes it a LOT better down low.

if you are going to bother with another engine, 1uz

the old tri-y was a classic engine, went forever and was bomb proof.
a mate of mine put a 2.8L 5mGE in his and that was pretty cool, used to go 4wd'ing in it sometimes, and you could take the roof off in summer and head to the beach with a truckload of people  good times.

dont disguise, Supra-ize....... put a 2JZ in the engine bay

If you want ride comfort on the road go for the 130 series surfs, coil sprung rear and independant front. Good tow wagon for upto 7 metre boats, and for race cars under 1500kg.

Might go halves with a mate who wants to use it for going hunting. Would be perfect without the canopy.

For me I'd use it for parts hauling, the dog and the beach. 8) And anywhere that I could find for some cheap offroading.

i had a 91 surf for a few months (was the ex's) and it was a pig on road and worse off road.
had a mild lift kit, biggish wheels which just made it roll like a cook strait ferry... and to make it worse it was auto (2.4 td auto  ).... the only time i took it off road i took it up the maungatapu which is by no means a hard 4wd track, in fact if you dont like your car then most of the time you can get a car up there, but a surf? nup, auto over heated started slipping and stopped all progress. let it cool down on the side of the track for half an hour or so, turned it round and slowly drove home.

looked cool but..... :?

as far as a comfory road cruiser that you can load up, stick a race car of boat on the back and go either on holiday or to the race track in, for the price you'll be hard pressed to find something more suitable.

in 2-3 months its getting a T04, FMIC, 550cc Injectors and a boost guage :)

I honestly believe the 2JZ-GE was MENT to be in a 130 surf. the power delivery is perfect, lazy around town, OK on economy and HP and torque it leaves the 3VZ-E for dead.

im currently toying with the idea of a surf for a tow wagon for the FX.
wouldnt mind a hilux, but price-wise i dont think they are worth it, especially the twincabs.

4wd means i can still take it offroad hunting and so on
but i have a feeling they will all be slow and gutless
i drive a 2006 ford courier turbo diseasel daily for work, and its fairly piggish - well compared with the caldina anyways!
so was thinking along the factory 3L petrol or 1UZ transplant route.
no idea how the 3L petrol performs, and i know next to nothing else about the surfs themselves - model, motor, acceptable prices etc
what i do know is that i want manual, 4wd, probably low ratio
prefer 4 doors
and of course i dont want to spend a fortune!

if anyone has any advise etc, i would appreciate it
or if anyone sees a nice shell lying around cheap, let me know!

i was thinking if im going to the do the 1UZ conversion, it would be easiest to start with a 4wd, manual, petrol shell would i not?
