The Drinking Age?

Postby Disco » Fri Jun 20, 2003 5:59 pm

Well? - what do you think?

I love a bit of controversy hmm..

It should be put back up to 20 if not 21...

The way i see it, 20 means 18 and 18 means 16...

I realise this country is messed up because of this crappy government and doing things to the drinking age won't actually make a difference - but I just wanna know whether i'm the only one that thinks it should be raised again...

I second that Disco :D Too many young'ns at the pubs. The 18-20 year olds are OK, but as you say 18 means 16! So I think it should go back up to 20.

I say 20. Either way people are going to be drinking from younger than that. I was drinking at 15 when it was 20.
At 18, unless strictly controlled you get 16-17yr olds at the bars & clubs too.At least at 20 its a bit easier to monitor
Cant believe im still a member here.

I think keep it at 18.. tho im just saying that coz im just turning 19 8O Its not like id have much of a problem if it was raised to 20 tho, coz im close enough and the bf is 20 :D, but it would still pose a problem for clubbing/pubs, but its not like i go out much anyway haha

Still, the fact remains that a lot of 14-17 year olds get alcohol given to them by their parents :? which is kind of disturbing, parents are busy complaining about the youth of today and yet they support their kids drinking habits...

i say, put it back to 20, there's far to many 14-19 year old dropkicks that hang around town that have had alcohol that just look to cause trouble, If their parents want to supply them alcohol then let them but make them accountable for their childs actions, If you raise your kiddies well then you will have no problems now would you?

But to be fair i think most young'ins these days are pretty sensible, its just that 10-15% that ruin it for the rest! Thats life isnt it?

I hate teens who think they're cool because they drink themselves into a vomiting-all-over-everyone stupor.

However, if you're responsible, I think it's fine to have a drink as early as 13....as long as you don't get drunk. Wait until you get into university to get totally plastered, heh.

As far as laws go, might as well raise it up to 21, like the US of A. 8)

i believe it should be kept at 18 and yes i did turn 18 2 days ago but that isnt the reason why.
if people under the drinking age really want alcohol then they will get it at least if you are old enough too go to the pub you will be drinking in a semi-controlled situation rather than out on the street people have said about how there are far too many people walking around on the street pissed causing trouble obviously if they are on the street they are not drinking in the pub/clubs so how would raising the age help this.
maybe let 18s drink in pubs/clubs but make take awys and purchases from bottle stores ilegal for under 20s.

just to help make up the balance disco, im gonna not vote and i'll comment instead :D

i honestly am not fussed if the drinking age is raised as if the underage people want it bad enough, they'll get their alcohol anyway. but i agree that its harder to look 21 than 18. so maybe thats the answer?

But in saying that, i was able to buy alcohol when i was 15 (the legal age was 21 then)

Just before i was 18 it was lowered and i thought it was the best thing since the AW11..

BUT now being more mature and seeing reality it should be higher (20/21)

but i think it comes down to "if youre ready" not coz you 'think' you are..

But youre right.. the NZ Govt id $&#$% up and i think all would be good if they got off their asses and seen the real world.

To be honest, I'm not really too fussed coz I'm 21 anywayz!!

But I do strongly disagree with the young ones out there who can't handle their alcohol and cause trouble!! If they can't get in to the pubs, they'll hang out on the street and cause chaos and there'll be no cops around to deal with it, coz they're tooo busy cracking down on boyracers!!! :x

Young people will still drink regardless of the drinking age, coz that's just the way it is!! My parents bought me alcohol at 15/16 when going to a party and that was cool, coz I didn't go mental and I learnt to not drink too much and be responsible!! Unfortunately not all 15/16 year olds are like that!!

The voting age is 18, you're old enough at 18 to have a full license and be in control of a motor vehicle, so theoretically you're old enough to handle alcohol???? (supposedly?) But my point is that if they are going to raise the drinking age back to 20, then other stuff should be brought into line with it.

Age restrictions will NEVER stop EVERYONE and that's just life!

anywayz, that's my 2 or 5 cents worth! 8)

the reality is that because of the general younger pre-20 age of most of the people on this board then i think the result of the pol is gonna definately be leave it at 18!!

You all will realise that when you get to a more mature age that most people are far too young to handle alcohol at that age!!

Its quite funny how looking at school kids these day, just the amount of disrespect for adults and its getting worse every year 8O

On the other hand you are old enough to die for your country at 18 so it doesnt make sense not to be allowed to make your own desisions about alcohol!!

I guess im on the fence

Hey, I'm American, and have expressed a desire to kill Bush on several occassions. He's not my f*cking President, I voted for the other guy.
