KE30 Clunk when accelerating

Postby jeremiahnz » Thu Jun 14, 2007 9:54 am

My ke30 is making quite a loud clunk noise when I accelerate in first, second and third. The car also seems to be vibrating quite a bit as you get up to speed.

I changed the gearbox from a K50 to a K40 over the weekend as I thought it was the K50 causing the clunking sound.

My guess is that it could be the diff but not entirely sure.

Yep, checked all the gearbox mounts and they seem fine.

Checked that the driveshaft is done up properly and that the gearbox has oil.

Yep, checked exhaust. It all seems to be mounted fine and not hitting anything.

The clunk does have that kinda hollow sound to it though.

Either your diff is poked or your driveshaft isnt the correct length. Did you use a Corolla or Starlet 5 speed?

This has a KE30 K40 in it now (original gearbox) and is making the clunking. It did have a starlet K50 in it for a couple of weeks but the bearings were a bit noisy so I took it out.

There doesn't seem to be any clunking when corning which I thought was a sign that the diff was on the way out. It is just accelerating (unless you take off really really slow) or under load in something like 2nd gear (such as accelerating up a hill)

Cheers

So was it clunking before you swapped to the K50?

What are the driveshaft universal like?My KE35 had a rumbly vibration.Front universal joint on the driveshaft was totally shot. I think the clunk will be wear in the diff.

Yeah, I think you have it right andyz

Had a look at is last night with a mate who thinks it is the uni's in the driveshaft. I am getting them replaced this weekend which should hopefully fix it.
