Engine suggestions

Postby nz_climber » Sun Jun 24, 2007 8:50 pm

Well I have started some planning for a new project:
First off sell my 18RG powered chevron, so if anyone keen let me know..
Next is building my own lotus 7 type car! Always wanted to do it!

I am looking at a McGregor Motorsports chassis, with IRS etc, they do some good kits, and strong chassis (similar to the fraser in looks)
next is what engine to put in it....

Current thought is Beams 3SGE and 6 speed box from the altezza, but open to suggestions, looking for I4 engine, NA 1.8-2.2L want about 200+hp - hence the beams idea.. and engine in RWD is a bonus

2ZZGE would be good but how expensive are these? and can they do RWD easy?

SR20 how easy is it to get 180-200hp NA? don't know anything about them..

McGregor use MX5 1.8L in a few of them, just because its easy and cheap, any ideas on that? good motor? i know they down on HP but can that be brought up with a bit of work?

and dear i say it s2000 engine? expensive??

Any thoughts?

can you fit a 6 cylinder in to them or not?

1JZGE n/a cams, multiple throttle bodies, extractors etc - it'd sound right and go right.

not sure about fitting 6, don't think I got much length to play with, they fit a v8, but they not any longer that I4, will have a look thou..

k20A the same as F20C but just rwd?? how much is a K20A and how easy are they to find thou? I know a certain ginge that would be pretty jealous of the if it ended up running a honda

not sure on price, theyd still demand some good coin id guess.

sr20dets are lightweight engines which may be something to consider also

I really want to stay NA, anyone know how well a SR20 responds to a bit of work? easy 200hp? or that cost a ton of money?

no they are not!! just because it's alloy, it isn't necessarily light.
they are a good option for your project, 200hp would be the 3 C's.

I would be looking at a honda K20A from the dc5 integras. Trouble free motoring, those bastards never need to open the engine lid on rallies  Many people in the motorsport world will agree. Then couple with a hondata chip for an easy extra 10HP on an already high output motor. You could use an adaptor plate for any RWD box, just change the spline on the honda clutch or use the RWD box clutch if it will fit on teh honda flywheel.

Don't Honda engines have the opposite crank rotation from pretty much well all other commonly available engines?

By my reckoning, with an adapter plate up to say a celica box, that'd give you 5 reverses and a first.....

Yep, damn backwards honda's. And it's not only the rotation that's backwards in them either. The electrics are backwards too, but anyway.

The only correct rotating honda engine to my breif honda knowledge is the S2000 one.

If you could get around the mounting problems, a 2ZZGE would be worth looking at, or else the Beams Altezza 3SGE is the obvious choice.

Yep, most Honda engines spin the "wrong' way.

If you to use the most powerful 2-litre production engine in the world - ie the S2000 - you could surely use the rwd box that comes with it (btw I think the S2000 spins the "right" way anyway).

Have a wee Google, as there's a few 7 reps with these already, eg http://portland.craigslist.org/clk/car/353902396.html

Reports I read say the S2000 and the Toyota Altezza use the same gearbox anyway.

And yes the S2000 spin the "right" way, so they are the same as toyota's and the rest of the world, but only for that model

K20A and F20A (S2000 motor) both spin correctly. The biggest problem with the Honda motors? Affordability. My boss has been thinking about getting one to put in his MR2 next time he blows the current 3SGE but has been put off by the price - $7k-$8k are the prices he has been quoted for a standard one.

Beams motor? Much cheaper to purchase, around the same power as you're after (albeit not as much as the Hondas) and it's a Toyota :D

SR20s? You'd probably be after a SR20VE, which came out in the later Primeras and has variable valve timing. I don't know much about them but a quick Google found this SR20 Forumpage - according to it if you get the last of the motors you're looking at around the 200hp mark.

Or, for something a little different, how about a Hayabusa motor? 175hp standard, very small and light, you could use the standard sequential gearbox with an electric reverse gear mechanism and have a very unique (in NZ anyway) Lotus replica. And with the light weight of the car the lack of torque wouldn't be such a problem.
We know that four-wheel drive doesn't work in a racing car, and I proved to myself that it doesn't work very well for rallycross. I'm absolutely convinced that it has no future in rallying, either, even if the regulations allowed it. - Roger Clark (rallying legend), circa 1976

altho they accually spin the right way for there intended purpose ie: under accelaration they put weight on the front wheels not pull it off like the toyota

Yep teh motor I was talking about spins the 'right' way (K20A), also the s2000 motor spins correctly to mate a standard RWD box. It was cahunas boss that was telling me about them, also lots of other people have much praise for them.

The other earlier honda motors are also class, but spin opposite to most other motors.
