whats up with this box?

hey at school were pulling fixing up an offroader
we got it without engin in it and we asumed it had an auto coz the geair stick only moves bacwors and forwds but we found a cluch on the engin (compleetly screwd) so we tryd the geairbox and the selector thing only seems to go in and out
the engin is one of thoes 1ltr 3cyl from a charde
anyone no whats up with this one??

inder closer inspection box seems kinda rootedand i think there is a pece missing ands shifter does move from side to side just quite stiff
anyone got a speair chirad box???
