185/60/14's in the Wellington area?

Postby Leon » Wed Aug 01, 2007 2:34 pm

Right, the evil bastard rock hard 13" rubber on the Starlet is starting to make me nervous in this rainy weather. I ended up stepping the back out as I drove off the motorway at the Terrace offramp, at what I thought was a very safe slow speed.

So, I'm figuring stuff that for a joke, and I will replace them before they kill me. Still, considering they cost $56 for the set of four, including steel wheels, I can deal with it.

I've got some slightly ratty 14" alloys in the garage with bald tyres, so I figure I will use those as it will make the car look a bit better anyway.

What are some medium performance tyres in 185/60/14? My friendly (cheap) tyre man suggested Pirelli P6000's or Bridgestone Grid 3 would be in my price range. I've looked online, and the reviews on the P6000's are mostly very bad, with lots of people saying they're absolute rubbish.

What's around in the sub $150 / corner range, to suit a non turbo EP82 Starlet.

Leon, I could place a phone call to my mate in taranaki who gets tires supplied to him ex japan with aprox 90% of the tread left on them, some I have seen have never hit the road, thats if you want to play the tight wallet game.

If not...the give beaurepairs or similar a call there may still be old stock of the FM901's laying around, I have picked up a full set of them for the KE (195x60x14) for $550 fitted and balanced.

Had the FM901's on the Corona before moving to the 17's & was very impressed with them in both dry & wet conditions

You can still get fm901's in that size too.

Nah, I don't want to go second hand. I've always found that I pay half the price of a new tire, and get 20% of the life of a new tire. Considering that the price of a fit and balance has gone through the roof, it just isn't worth mucking about with used tires unless they are something pretty special.

I hate ringing tire shops, because I spent so long in the trade, and with useful tire shop contacts that I know how silly the "rrp" prices are. Sadly my best contact no longer works in the industry, and now I'm down to only one contact who has a limited number of brands he can get :(

the tight wallet game is hardly ever a good one to be playing when it comes to safety...

And tyres being the only thing holding you on the road, it's a not a game that anyone should be playing the cheap card on.

Yeah fully agree there :)

However having inside knowledge of what Leon uses the car for in the weekend it also gives him an option for using those for that ;)

Oh and by tight wallet I was purely meaning slightly cheaper....not shoe string budget :)

Leon, give the guys at Porirua a call (next to VTNZ) I spent all of 10 minutes max on the phone to them & got that price, which isnt too shappy compared to the quote for Yokohama's @ $700 odd just for tires

Hey Leon (Deerism off gp here)
I just got two Dunlop DZ101's for $300 from Tony's tyres on railway ave lower hutt for my aw (incl gst, fitting / balancing)
They are 185/60/14 :) (Smallest and only 14" size for those tyres)

They seem to be pretty good.. better than the Bridgy MY01's on my last car.
Can't complain with the service at all either, they sprayed the other two existing tyres, rotated them for me, cleaned my windscreens, gave me a $10 voucher, a demister rag and couple of chupachups :D

Yeah, I guess I need to shop around a bit.

I can get the Pirelli's for $135 a corner on the car, but haven't got a price on the Bridgestones yet.

Anyone got any Toyo contacts? I had some Toyo's on my Charade that were really good...

Scrunty ... so when we seeing you at an event?

I was looking at getting the same wet tyres that Webster is running as they seem to work well for him. Dunno what model they were or if they can be got in 14" tho. Neil does them

I wonder if those tyres are 15" only, as Neil only mentioned the Pirelli and Bridgestone.

Forgot to mention the ex two tyres (and my still current, now rear's) are Bridgy Potenza GIII's - judging by my short squirt up the twisty road leading to my house the DZ's appear to be superior (but being softer will no doubt wear quicker) Could also be a placebo effect taking place here though..

RE: events
Just finished paying off my loan as of today actually :D
Should free up the required funds I need to signup and head along.. but first GP trackday and a long needed week of holiday!

Hmmm ... same Toyo's as I had on the Detomaso Charade $99 + gst each.

I think we have a winner.

Scrunty, keep an eye out in the Welly section of the board, as there is pretty much a monthly autocross up at Levin, and the occasional one at Kapiti, or at other venues around the general area. $20 fun days out (sometimes $30 if it is a venue that needs to be hired).

I have Kumho 712 tyres as my wet weather tyres on the race car , but the smallest they come in is 195/50/15 . I would recomend the Kumho 711 but Neil seems to think they are no longer available ( would pay to hassle him to check )

"Understeer" is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.
"Oversteer" is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"Horsepower" is how fast you hit the fence.
"Torque" is how far you take the fence with you.
