Toyota to build a new MR2 & Celica

Postby rolla_fxgt » Tue Jul 31, 2007 9:02 pm

Was reading the july 11 autocar tonight & there was an article on toyota bringing out 3 new sportscars, the new supra (we know about), a MR2 replacement ( 2 door mid engined) and a celica (2 door dont know the engine or drive layout), sounds good but i'm wondering if Autocar have the rebirth of the celica & the new ae86 confused or if the whole ae86 thing was just a myth.

Anyway excited about a new decent MR2.

Also saw that Mazda are building a MPS version of their new Mazda 2, with a 2litre turbocaharged engine. Yay bring back the hot hatch wars! & perhaps this signals Mazda wanting to restart rallying since all most of the WRC cars are hatch based 2L turbo.

My 2cents
Thoughts?

Not being a hater to either AW11 or the FC, cause I like em both, but man, I would go that far :P
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

Whilst I would love to see the originator of production based Group A 4wd turbo's back on the scene. Id doubt it… Ford already has a WRC entrant. And they pulled the plug on Jaguar's F1 effort, so there's obviously not a lot of marketing budget left for motor sport.

WRC rules do not require the maker to make a 2l 4wd car....

doesn't even look close. The only thing you can visually compare an AW11 to, is a transformer............. or a Fiat X1/9

New MR2, can't argue with that. Better give it a good engine though.

I'd think both the celica & the MR2 would have similar engines, probally some sort of hybrid 2zz or similar, perhaps a new 3s hybrid, but i guess thats just hoping for too much

But what else would they base a sports engine on? I mean its unlikely to be a v6, but perhaps a supercharged whatever it is they use in those trd aurions in aus. with a hybrid power pack, though where youd fit one of those in an MR2 if they stay a similar size god only knows, perhaps it comes with its own trailer.
