Re drilling ST headers for aw11

Postby AE86less » Thu Aug 02, 2007 11:18 pm

One of the things i failed my last wof on was a crack in the exhaust manifold, so i figured it was the perfect excuse to whack in a set of silvertop headers. I scored a set off TM for $10.50 8) but i know that they need to be redrilled the fit the 16v.

My question is: Would i be able to do it myself? I only have very basic tools... If not, where should i get it done (Auckland/North Shore)? And how much will it cost?

Cheers.

EDIT: I also recently put a pod filter in on the standard intake hose thing. I noticed a little tube from the back of the standard filter box to a sensor thing (?). What is this? I figured that it measured the temp of the air into the engine, am i right? And is it ok just just leave it inconnected to the intake?

I'll bet yours cracked between on the number 3 exhaust, next to the number 4. Good guess aye? Happens on ALL the AW's, but not FXGT's, even though they have the same manifold!

I bought some silvertop extractors from Rory (No8_wire) and they were already drilled. I don't think its that hard. If you've got some experince, you should be able to do it.

One thing that will get in your way is the flange at the end. It won't fit on your stock one.
Luckily, I was supplied a 20v 2-1 section as well, so my dad and I did a little handy word and cut and welded the 20v 2-1 section onto my existing exhaust.

As for the sensor, mine already came with a pod, but I think I know the one you're talking about. Connects up to a small cylinder shaped thing, right?
Is there also a tube that goes to the throttlebody (Or might have been the intake manifold).
If its the one I'm thinking of, I've been told its for measuring the pressure difference between the airbox and the intake manifold.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

I'm not sure about the 4AGZE one, but I'll tell you another thing I remembered, is that the oxy sensor is in the manifold, whereas in the 20v's (And the 4AGZE by the looks) is in the 2-1 section.

But hold on, yours is NZ new isn't it?

We still had leaded fuel back then, so it won't have an oxy sensor!

8)

I think i might just take it round a few exhaust places and see what they say, i can't be bothered waiting round for parts anymore. It's my daily driver and it's been off the road for 2 weeks already.

Mine isn't a 4agze, the 2-1 section i was looking at was, from a ae101.

I still want to know if having that hose loose is safe :?

Crap ... I was worried about this.
I too have (what I suspect) to be a cracked mani on my sc-aw, and also bought some ST headers (undrilled) ... looks like I'll need to go the whole hog and go custom after the 4-2 :(
