Where do you guys get bolts etc for cars from?

You can get the standard high tensile bolts from mitre 10 etc but they all have larger heads (size 19 rather than 17) etc and when trying to fit them in next to a bellhousing or something you cant get the damn socket in because its too wide!

just go to a specialist bolt place such as coastal fasteners or similar..not sure what you have up there, but the guys down here can get me almost any bolt i need

repco and supercheap stock them but they are crazy expensive, like 9$ for 4x m8 bolts

speciallist stuff like flywheel bolts and maybe bellhousing sets often come in kits from the manufacturer.

also there are fastener and bearing places such as schrodoco which usually have a better selection.there are a couple of places in welly too but dunno if thats much used to you. look in your local phone book or whatever for fastener speciallists and you should find something in your area. they are usually cheaper and more helpful too, as ive gone there looking for odd stuff sometimes.

i think automotive bolts are usually 1.25 thread, but couldnt confirm that without checking.

Yeah those packs are thievery, Bay Engineering will sell you a bunch for less.

your local dismantler should have a 'bucket o bolts' you can hunt thru for free or a small price

the bolt shop on archers rd, just off wairau rd around glenfield/wairau park area.

i usually keep all the old bolts when i strip stuff out of cars, have a draw full of spare nuts and bolts to hunt through for the right one when i need it.

Engineering supply stores, thats where i pick all my bolts up from, cheap as chips, especially if you can suss a discount

Just remember though, engineering stores generally only sell grade 6 or 12 in the 'high tensile' range, and grade 12 isn't cheap! automotive uses grade 9, and only specialized automotive engineering type stores seem to carry them, so most the time you got to toss up whether grade 6 is going to cover it or if your going to have to fork out the big bucks for the 12s!
