BZ-G Issues Update

Postby BigDon » Mon Aug 13, 2007 2:31 pm

Car: 1995 AE111 BZG, manual 166kms.

Car has an intermittent problem, its throwing fault codes 2-5 (air fuel ratio lean malfunction) and 5-2 (No.1 Knock Sensor Signal frotn side).

Symptoms:

Basically sometimes you put your foot down and it misses or is sluggish and then takes off or just misses. If you lift of and then put your foot down again (might have to do this twice) it goes, its weird… When it’s running fine it goes hard, though does seem to idle a bit rough sometimes.

Generally does it when it has only been up to temp for a while but then sometimes does it when I have been driving for a while, so not just a when cold thing. Check engine light comes on occasionally (say one in five drives) (and stays on) but resets and stays off (until the next time) when car restarted.

So based on the fault codes does this mean I am up for a new knock and O2 sensor if I am reading the codes right, what about maybe a tps (ive heard they can cause a problem like this). I’ve done leads, plugs, oil filter etc. but that didn’t help. Haven’t checked timing yet…. As I don’t have a timing light. But it doesn’t “feel” like a simple timing problem due to intermittent nature, codes, check engine light etc, though happy to be proven wrong. Suppose I could reset timing

If I need new sensors:

Are these generic across 4ages or 4As so can I go to pick a part and try and find some second hand ones?
Does anyone know the part number for these bits? And
Mr Revhead how much are they TS price from Toyota?

Any help appreciated as this is my daily driver (not my twin club car which runs mint) and its pis*ing me off big time. Or anyone in WGN who has a spare hour on Saturday arvo to come have a drive / look at it, and who maybe has a timing gun.

Right, timing is ok, so have changed O2 sensor ($235 via Mr Revhead, legend) as mechanic said it was poked (so did the ecu) and it looked really sooted up seems to be running heaps better. I have cleared the faults by pulling 15amp efi fuse and Im running it to taupo tonight so will see how it goes.

Both my BZ-Gs did the same thing - my old one did it something terrible so someone recommend taking off the plenum chamber and cleaning out/degreasing all the butterflies - this seemed to improve the drive but i could still feel slight missing as i took my foot off the accelerator.

Also check your thermostat - could be why the check engine light only comes on sporadically - had the same issue with my old one.

I think that if you havent checked teh codes for ages they are still stored til theyre cleared so the computer could be chucking codes at you to problems which have already been rectified.

Someone can correct me if im wrong.

Just above the thermostat housing, on the head there is a earth connection: check if it is not loose.
Knock sensor error is possibly connected with Lean mixture error.
What are kms are on cambelt?
I doubt that O2 Sensor is faulty.
It actually could be a simple thing like fuel pump is on the way out...

Actually now that you mention it i've noticed it more in my BZG - would be interested to know if you get it checked out, what the problem is...

After thrashing it to taupo and back the miss seems all sorted and it runs fine when its cold. Saturday was a cracker for skiing on the mountain.

I took out a blo*dy hare on the way there hit it so hard it popped the spot light out of the front bumper (snapping all the brackets as it did) and then the inner guard blew in so I had to stop and tidy that up I have a fist sized dent in my plastic bumper and zip ties holding eveything together now dam it.

On the way back the check engine came on again but only after I had been stopped at my folks for lunch and it did the same after I stopped at a mates for coffee, weird. It was still running fine though.

I will check the codes again and see what has tripped as Im not a fan of driving with the check engine on, even if it seems to be running fine.
