FWD/RWD alternators

Postby RS13 » Tue Aug 21, 2007 7:32 pm

Have used the search function but can't find exactly what I'm after.

Is a rwd bluetop alternator the same as any fwd alternator off another bluetop or redtop?

How much can one expect to pay to get an alternator rebushed/reconned?

And if you're got a suitable alternator in Christchurch and wouldn't mind swapping it for some $$, PM me.

Cheers. :)

i'm running a 20v alternator on my rwd 4age bluetop.
AFAIK the only thing that differs betwen them is the offset of the bolt holes/mounts and the plug type/shape.

I had read on the net and believed that there was a difference in the pulley alignment,

but just bought a couple of RWD alt mounts and fitted them to my 20V engines with std AE101 20V alternators and it all lines up,

not in my experience. waterpump pulleys yes, alternators no.

All still line up on the same crank pulley.

The RWD waterpump is longer as it has a larger bearing to support a mechanical fan, and so needs the rwd water pump pulley to suit the pump,

but I'm pretty sure they all still line up the same as long as you have the right parts.

Thanks guys, but it doesn't sound like we're in agreement..

So 20V alternator will fit RWD bluetop no problems, other than the plug? I don't see how a fwd bluetop or redtop alternator could differ much from a RWD one, although the pulley thing.. hmm.

edited my above post for clarity, matt posted before i finished so I wasn't saying he was wrong

im using fwd waterpump + waterpump pulley on a rwd waterpump housing and it all lines up fine, so as matt said they will all line up you just need the right parts.

but as far as I know alternators don't have different offsets like this. ive had many different alternators swapped from both fwd to rwd setups and never had a problem, except for what i mentioned above. oh and my 20v alternator had the same plug as was already on my loom, so it wasnt a problem for me but its just something to check when getting another alt

Almost all the 20V alt's i have seen have had the normal round plug too,

only the odd one has the flat/oval type.

so we all know there is a fwd & rwd crank pulley
and a fwd & rwd water pump/pulley

so the pulley on the alts all have the same alignment, its just the alt mount to engine that changers the alignment? in regards to there respective rwd and fwd set ups.

No matter what alternator and mount combo you use it will line up.
the only ones that are different are the GZE,
BUT,
The GZE alt wont fit any of the standard non-supercharged mounts,
and the supercharged mount wont fit any GZE alternators.

Basically, if it bolts up, it will line up.
There are no difference in the spacings of any non-gze alt's or mounts.
