Refreshing engine after Blown HG

Postby AE86less » Tue Sep 04, 2007 11:29 am

I picked up and ae82 fxgt yesterday from hamilton for $200.

It has a blown head gasket and a poked clutch

I have not dealt with a blown HG before and i want to know what i need to do to get the engine running primo again. I tried to start it yesterday and it was turning over fine but not firing, i'm pretty sure that it should still run? Anyway, once ive replaced the gasket, what needs doing?

Also, does anyone have any idea why the key might suddenly stop turning in the ignition? I took it out and now it wont turn.

I have tried looking for answers on the interweb, but everything assumes that i am not so n00bish..

Have the head checked to ensure it hasn't warped, otherwise it'll blow again within a short space of time. Good time to check all the valve guides and stem seals too.
As long as it didnt get too hot when it blew it ought to be ok...if it did, then the rings can get naffed as well.

Your question about the head was just answered.

With regards to the key, sounds like the key is warn and isnt lifting all the lugs in the ignition barrel. Same deal with my car, just get the key recut for $3 from a key cutter and it should fix that problem.

I'm not expecting the engine to be in great nick after 291 000kms anyway. I asked because all the plugs etc seem to be covered in carbon deposits... :? Looks like i need a replacement!

Cheers for the tip with the key, i did notice it was very worn.

you havent got the steering lock on have you? like turned the steering wheel until it locks.... if you have you need to turn the wheel a little bit then turn the key :)

Just thought i'd point out the obvious...

Nope, i accidently put the steering lock on after i couldn't turn the key :P

I think i must've broken something in the lock, the new key opens the boot just fine, but doesn't turn in the ignition

:? already used WD40.

I went to show my dad the problem and the key refused to turn in the boot as well, after feeling 100% fine before.

Lol, someone has mulched both of the door locks with a screwdriver on mine  . I think i might just go to Pickapart and get a whole new set.

Trouble is that this is stopping me from getting anything done on the engine :x

I wouldn't know? Can you do that even with the wheel/steering lock on?

You have to break the ignition. Those barrels taperd in and the mounting screws thread themselves when u install them. Youd need one of those pulleds like the car thieves use, or else remove your steering wheel and slide the whole ignition assembly off.

Cheers mate, will have a look when i get home from uni.

How much should i expect to pay for a clutch kit? Theres a guy on TM who reckons he can get a TGP one for $160, i'd prefer to buy that and the HG from warwick but i need them asap and he hasn't got back to me...
