Fog Lights

Postby Warren » Mon Sep 10, 2007 1:35 pm

Just been talking to friend of mine who went to Tauranga for the weekend, and said he got pulled over (Bombay hills) for having his fog lights on. It was raining and a little misty, so he put them on. The cop reckons your not allowed your fogs on unless it's foggy. Apparently theres going to be a blitz for this over the next month or 2.
Just thought some of you should be aware, even though this probably sounds completly rediculous.

About bloody time too! I'm sick and tired of getting blinded at night when following ignoramuses who are too dumb to notice that their rear fog lights are on. There is a reason that they are called FOG lights - what ever was wrong with people driving around at night using their headlights? I find that they actually work quite well...
We know that four-wheel drive doesn't work in a racing car, and I proved to myself that it doesn't work very well for rallycross. I'm absolutely convinced that it has no future in rallying, either, even if the regulations allowed it. - Roger Clark (rallying legend), circa 1976

What if your fog lights aren't as bright as your headlights? Ive never quite known the rules when it comes to foglights.

There is a big difference between Fog lights and driving/day lights.
Many cops don't know that.
The fog lights as name suggest are only to be used in fog, the big difference is that they are similar to high beam lights and brightler than driving/day lights.
Driving/day lights are designed to be complementary light for high/low beam lights - they shine right under low beam area. Driving/day lights generaly do not blind people, and in some cars are always on. The main difference that they are arround 25-35W halogen lights. Fog lights usually have much more powerfull light bulbs in them.

What pisses me off the most are stupid BMW drivers driving with their rear fog lights on all the time.

Daytime running lights should turn off when the dipped or main beams are on (Although some stay on from factory) and I wouldn't expect them to be any use at complimenting anything from a drivers perspective (Other than that your vehicle is "easier" to see)

And Driving lights are only allowed to be on with the main beams which would definitely blind oncoming traffic

So that people following behind you in a fog can see your car before running up your date. It is those bright red lights (brighter than a brake light) that drivers like to use to blind the people behind them on the motorway.

I swear about every 2 years the cops/LTSA change their mind over whether they want these on during the day (driving lights especially), last i heard they were suggesting everyone drive with them on all the time so people can see your car.

When i get a new one for the passengers side of mine i'll be driving with them on again. Its amazing how many people can't see a silver car & i'd far rather cop a ticket & argue my part in court than be dead cause some idiot can't see me.

Define fog lights though...

Most AE111/101 come with spotlights as standard. I always have my spotlights on when driving at night cause I find that my head lights are useless and don't light up the road enough especially when driving the back roads of Flat Bush.

Are they goign to come down hard on using spot lights?

fog lights are low mounted lights, ie under the bumper.
they are for shining under fog along the road to help you be seen.
they are NOT in the grille, nor are they for YOU to see. as such the are set up to shine along the ground.

driving lights/spot lights are auxillary lamps used with high beam for open road condidtions. they are mounted above the bumper line and illuminate a large area.

the law for some time has said you cannot use the fog lights or driving lights in conditions other than above.

if you want ppl to see you better, use your headlights. park lamps are useless.

if you drive around with your foglamps or driving lamps on to be cool, please go die now.

When I'm on the open road (goin out of town) I always have my spots on on my ae111 levin.

I do it so I can be seen better, especially on cloudly wintery days. Even with them on I still get a lot idiots coming towards me trying to pull out and pass people...

There not excessively bright or anything so wouldn't annoy anyone. I just want to be seen...

Oi quit it :P Most cool people ditch them for the STi covers anyway! I was just about to post this question:

I have an GC8 WRX STI with factory equipped lights (instead of the covers)

They are mounted low and when they are on they light up the side and directly in front below the low beam line of the headlights. What are these classed as?

I usually have them turned off but have them on in real crap weather or on rural roads with no street lights only

They'd be fog lamps wouldn't they? (STi)

What gets be agro, is people who drive past me at night, with their fog lights on.. and flash their high beams at me because they think my LOW BEAM is too bright? well $&#$% me should I drive with no lights on then.

i had it explained to me by my friendly wof inspector, that if the lights are factory fitted, and able to be switched on and off seperate to the normal head lamps, then they are classed as fog lights and are to be used as per revheads comment.
