hmmm maybe he should watch some tapes of button, hamilton, yada yada yada...

Mclaren GUILTY as charged...

$100 million USD fine

Stripped of all constructers points man I suppose at least the drivers are points are not affected by this mess.

My thing with this whole saga is that what was the Chief designer doing with 800 odd pages of Ferrari's technical data that just did'nt sit right with me and as for that Nigel Stepney he should have something to answer for for this mess as well.

I no Mclaren are a reputable team but they have improved out of site in 12 months so if they have gained benefits from this Ferrari technical data the fine suits the crime.

No doubt there will be a appeal so I guess we'll have to wait and see what pans out........ 8O

Drivers do keep their points.

Does anyone know what the evidence was yet that was so damning to strip them of all constructors points and fined that much?

This isn't over by a long way, Mclaren will appeal, and if that fails they'll take it outside the FIA and into the civil courts. This isn't good for F1 and I can't see the decision and penalties standing, especially as the last recorded case, when Toyota actually used Ferrari info they weren't entitled to, resulted in no sanction. :?

Looks like McLaren will win the constructors championship, but it will be awarded to Ferrari, pretty hollow victory, especially when the only "crime" committed was by a Ferrari employee. Enzo would be proud of the intrigue ;)

Statement from Ron Dennis http://www.mclaren.com/mediaroom/information/pressreleases/Press_Information-13th%20September2007.php

Paris, France, Thursday 13th September 2007

“The most important thing is that we will be going motor racing this weekend, the rest of the season and every season. This means that our drivers can continue to compete for the World Championship. However having been at the hearing today I do not accept that we deserved to be penalised in this way.”

“Today’s evidence given to the FIA by our drivers, engineers and staff clearly demonstrated that we did not use any leaked information to gain a competitive advantage.”

“Much has been made in the press and at the hearing today of emails and text messages to and from our drivers. The World Motorsport Council received statements from Fernando Alonso, Lewis Hamilton and Pedro de la Rosa stating categorically that no Ferrari information had been used by McLaren and that they had not passed any confidential data to the team.”

“The entire engineering team in excess of 140 people provided statements to the FIA affirming that they had never received or used the Ferrari information.”

“We have never denied that the information from Ferrari was in the personal possession of one of our employees at his home. The issue is: was this information used by McLaren? This is not the case and has not been proven today.”

“We are also continually asked if McLaren didn’t use the information, what was the reason for Stepney and Coughlan collecting all this data about Ferrari? We can only speculate as neither Coughlan nor Stepney gave evidence at today’s hearing, but we do know that they were both seeking employment with other teams, as already confirmed by both Honda and Toyota.”

“There will be no issue for the 2008 season as we have not at any stage used any intellectual property of any other team.”

“We have got the best drivers and the best car and we intend to win the World Championship.”

FIA are to release sometime soon I think the reasons WHY they decided on this sanction... can't really say much until then.

Show me where he said anything like that?

Listen to the the entire press conference at http://www.mclaren.com/interactive/audio/Press%20Conference.mp3

If you are referring to the McLaren Engineers that took technical data to Renault, that's an entirely different matter and isn't part of this whole fiasco.

friday europe time, so ill be scouring the web at 1am looking for it!

there seems to be a lot of bewilderment as to what the proof is, and the weirdness of the penalty....

lose constructors points, but not drivers.... that says to me there is no problem with the car.
so whats the problem?
