Wheel Bearing?

Postby varix » Wed Sep 19, 2007 12:15 am

I have had a strange noise/ feeling coming from the front right side of my car for the last few months every time a take a corner. The best corners to really notice it are long sweeping corners at reasonable speed (60km).

Basically it makes the steering wheel wobble a tiny bit, and makes a low sort of sound to match the wobble. The faster you go the quicker it goes. Kinda like what you would expect if your wheel wasn't balanced properly. As far as i know my wheel is balanced properly and the tires are near new.

Does this sound like a dud wheel bearing? Or are there other possibilities?
CV's have been done 20k ago, and its not a dud CV noise.

jack it up

spin the wheel and listen for rumbling (vibration), rumbling is bad

hold the wheel at 9 and 3 and see if theres movement backwards and forwards towards the engine.

the above are ways I got shown as to why a car I took for a WOF failed on wheel bearing

NOTE: this was only what I was told.

if you aren't 100% sure on the balancing tho, could be worth getting it rechecked on that wheel

If they're not sealed bearings they are pretty easy to tighten up and repack with grease, that should stop the sounds etc

wont stop the sound if hes damaged the bearings to a point where there hardening has started to come off, once thats happened its $&#$% no amount of grease will save it

but if its to that point, the bearing should've overheated by now and blown a couple of smoke rings

Slightly better the hold wheel at 6 & 12 as slight play from steering rack could effect what you feel....but 6 & 3 can work as well :)

Loosen the hub nut and then give the wheel a wiggle test. You probably won't be able to feel anything with the hub nut done up.
If movement/clunking with hub nut done up, then check bottom arm ball joint, tie rod end, and rack end.
