Quick turbo mounting question

Postby TRD_ZERO » Fri Oct 05, 2007 4:33 pm

Ive had a look on here and want to know why most of the 4age fwd guys mount their turbo so that the compressor side is on the drivers side? Is there any reason why i cant mount my turbo so that the compressor side is on the passanger side. What i mean is use a evo 4 and up turbo instead of a evo1-3 turbo. Is there any particular reason most of you run them evo1-3 style. Hope you can understand what im trying to get at.

shorter intercooler piping if compressor is on drivers side.

actiondan used to make alot where the comp was on the passengers side and also able to retain aircon etc. and depends how tight the exhaust will be to the x-member

if your getting a custom manifold done, just put it exactly where you want :) there are pro's and cons of each that will determine how other things are done. if you mount the comp on the drivers side, there is generally not enough room for std oil filter (with bigger turbos)

also think about the return, you can only mount a turbo so high with the compressor on the drivers side. just make sure you can get the filter piping on, but also have enough height for return, (not so much of an issue with compressor on other side)

umm hope that helps.

Yeah that is the kinda info i wanted i want the comp side on the passenger side so i can have my air filter where the battery sits. Im wanting to keep the aircon and make a airbox which i cant see happening if the comp is on the drivers side. My biggest issue now that i think of it would be intercooler piping from turbo intercooler but im sure i can get around that somehow.

mines on passenger side. retains standard oil filter , although it requires removal of turbo downpipe to remove it. my airfilter sits where the battery tray used to be.

theres also a lot less stuff on passenger side, if i removed my intake i can stand in the engine bay between radiator and gearbox.

Did you have any trouble clearing the crossmember with anything. Any issues mounting the external. Any issues at all? Id really appreciate some pics if you are able to post them up it will give be a better idea of what my next step will be.

ive made manifolds to suit both,
evo 4 on turbos are generally more expensive, hence less people using them, and a bit more cost in making manifold to suit twin scroll.

drivers side is my preferred direction, shorter intercooler piping, doesnt need to pass over turbo or exhaust,
no need for airbox if airfilter is under front guard,

powersteering doesnt generally become an issue, if building a decent setup most people i met were ditching their a/c.

im sure the piping is exactly the same for either side as the compressor still points down in roughly the same place.
ive yet to see a 4agte that retains the aircon
no issue clearing crossmember
only issue to consider is clearance from radiator, but that is relevant to mounting either way. ive seen civic half radiators used often.

wastegate tees off to drivers side and runs down under next to exhaust.

there is only one spot where exhaust and i/c piping gets close and thats really only because my piping is a poor fit.

Or feed the piping the other way if you want to do it the other way. Compressor on the passengers side, air filter where the battery was.

I think my one was an ActionDan job, no need to relocate the filter or anything

Maybe a bit off topic, but has anyone ever high-mounted a turbo on a 4age? And particular reasons why not?

main reason is space with high mounting.
