gearbox id

hey ive just got a second hand 4agze with a fwd box on it, itll be going rwd so im going to sell the gearbox,

my question is how do i find out what gearbox this is? i cant find any codes on it and want to make sure its not lsd before i sell it too cheap.

i believe if it has an LSD if you look through the hole where the driveshafts come out you'll be able to see the rod two of the spider gears are attached to.

all i know is it was bolted to a 4agze(map) and was in a ae82

well can only be ae92 or ae101 gtz, and there isnt much difference between the 2.

if you do a search on e series gearboxs and lsd you'll find a thread with pictures of what they all look like. ae101 is easy to distinguish a factory lsd. ae92 its not really possible unless you have the other to compare.

actually its possible it could be a c series 4age gearbox with the appropriate driveshafts attached too.

i have to different boxxes off ae92 gtz's and there doth differtnt from another

Its easy to tell whether its an E series or a C series.
An E series is alot worse for your back to pick up

Not quiet like that. If it is torsen it will behave just like an open diff when 1 wheel is in the air. If it is viscous it will be slightly tighter than open diff when 1 wheel is in the air.

The good way to tell is to either open the gearbox or do a skid, also there is some info on how to tell by looking into drive shaft hole in the gearbox.

Obviously doing a skid is the best way but its not in a car by the sounds of it right now. and that hole theory is just as unreliable as I've had C and E series LSD boxes and some you were able to look through the hole and others you weren't.

in other words do a skid.

its all been covered before, find the old thread. theres about 5 pages of discussion on it.

IIRC its impossible to tell as the diameter of the hole in the middle comes in all sorts of sizes. i had an ae92 with aftermarket lsd and and ae101 non lsd and the only difference between the 2 was the size of the hole in the middle by about 5mm.

ae101 you'll see the hex bar if its a factory LSD and it will be blatantly obvious.

any other factory lsd's do funny things sometimes so don't rely on any test other than a good skid or opening up the gearbox.

its not very likely it has an aftermarket lsd , but if it did , when on the car you'd be able to jack up one wheel and it will lock after a certain amount of rotation. my old lsd when it wasnt stuffed would only turn about an inch and it would lock both wheels together.


and yes agree totally with comment to differentiate c series and e series. your back will tell you when go to pick it up E series = heavy as
