I spent all of last year and some of this year in Australia and only recently I have found out that the NZ import laws are changing yet again. I think roughly anything older than 2000, you will not be able to import into NZ from next year onwards...

What effect do you think this will have on the market especially with cars liek AE111's which there are a dime a dozen - do you think their prices will hold at their current value and not decrease or do you think you will justifiably be able to increase the cost of them by a coupel of grand like Evo 1 -3s???

Sorry this isn't a topic on AE111 import values but i would be interested to know what your thoughts are on this particular model

When the last import law changed, there was much sobbing leading up to it, and then really bugger all changed. I suspect it is likely to be much the same with this change, as I am guessing importers will have stocked up, anticipating the law change.

i believe the cut off year is going to be 2002,

should be interesting to see the effect on late 90s cars, particularly performance oriented stuff. driveline transplants ftw?

it needs to be done imo, but such a large jump is a bit on the nose.

2000 for a start methinks, then in 12 months its gonna get even harsher...

Its fine saying "less old crappers on the road..blah blah.." but you can also wave goodbye to anything diesel before about 2004/5-ish, cos noone of it qualifies under the current planned ban...

Just means everyone will be holding onto their old diesel vehicles, especially companies running small trucks etc, for much longer. Defeats the purpose of the ban...

so does that mean if you wanted a classic (say a ta22) you couldnt bring that in?

But is the 'over 20 years' category still going to exist after this latest round of law changes?

This is really bugging me, I want to buy a car here (Japan) that I can use and then send back to NZ in a few months when I come back, but I have no idea if I buy a car now, whether it will be acceptable under the new laws.

Shouldn't they have a longer period between the rules being decided and it being enforced?

in a few years things assembled in 2004 are going to be 5 years old - there will be plenty of reasonably priced diesels avaliable i think. it is certainly going to hurt car yards that sell trucks n stuff in the short term though.

my main objection is the huge one off leap, surely increasing the age limit by two years every year for 5 or 6 years or something would have been a better way to ease people into it. after that you could just go one for one.

been talking to some car dealers about this and they say there is a 4 month period where you can still registor car that have been brought before 1st of january or where in transit

anyone else heard of this?

When the front impact laws came in as long as you have your Dereg/import papers showing the car was purchased before the set date you were OK.
Boat space and prices are going to be at a premium for a few months I reckon.

That would definately help people to cope... My understanding is that they are going to go one for one though, the 2002 thing is just a starting point and each year they will move the limit up by a year.

too my understanding next year its going to be 98+ then the year after that nothing older 5 years?

Not quiet, as far as I heard it is going to be anything including and above GF- prefix in chassis number (ie GF-JZA80, GH-SXE10 etc.) for the first year, after a year they will upgrade to GH- standard.
