GPS Maps for Jap Import

Postby Marshman » Tue Nov 27, 2007 5:33 am

Does anyone know if there are people out there that can convert New Zealand GPS Maps to work on Japanese Imported units/vehicles ?.

nope - not worth it to convert..

you're better off ripping out the system or converting the ntsc screen into something worth watching.

chuck a carputer in there with a satellite internet connection and enjoy the power of smaps :)

Not that you're biased! ;-)

I'm actually a convert to the whole GPS thing, esp if youre travelling in a foreign country.. (was a godsend in the USA..)

biased? not at all
simply put, there are a myriad of Japanese manufactured nav systems out there and none have facility for other countries.

you either remove, convert or use something else.

So it's not worth doing at all? Dad's gt-t has a Toyota Nav system that uses cds, can you get cds from Toyota NZ or something?

any one got pics or facts on what they have done with theres. Is it possible to keep the screen but use it for something else? dvd playback etc
or is it better to replace with an aftermarket unit?

if you read what i wrote i didnt ask whether they got gps working, i asked whether the screens themselves could be used (as i have heard they can be used for playstations) or what they had been replaced with, and pics of anything people had done.

I hooked up one of those screens to PC via TV-Out set to NTSC.
It is possible to use RGB signal as well (I assume you can hack the plug to work with D-sub style VGA connector).

you can get the screens to work, but its different for each vehicle as there is no standardisation on the wiring looms they use.

have a look through this section for a guy who converted his altezza screen into something more usable.

note that the screens straight from japan use ntsc instead of our native pal systems in nz

if they are from japan, then its ntsc.
and generally, the retractable ones are din size, so it will fit most cars with a din size hole in it.
