streaight 6 diferent?

ok i just noticed somthing kind of intereseting...

most engins (in north south inline configoration) have the intake on left and exaust on right (wen looking from front of car) but the likes of the 2jz and 1g are the other way around to normail
is there any reasons to this? or just deen digsined diferently for the hell of it??

Actually I would like to know this too. There are few euro's similar to this. I thought it came down to basically because the can.

Also, depends which side the steering wheel was originally designed to be on.

6 cyl's are dedicated FR engines, where as the likes of the 3s, etc, are available in both, why redesign the engine just for the orientation. why 6's aren't the same as the 4's i don't know, but the 4's are that way round due to the exhaust being towards the front, and intake towards the back *shrugs* thats my thought anyway.

New cars I noticed have exhaust at the back with the likes of Mazda 3 MPS, which I though was weird cause the turbo's tucked away down there.

I think there has been a thread on this before, it rings a bell.

Exhaust keeps the driver warm :P TBH I think it's just like that cos they felt like it. RBs are the opposite to toyota inline 6's, with intake on the drivers side and exhaust on passenger

New Hondas are like that too.

From memory it has something to do with emissions and keeping the gasses hot as possible going through the cat

all other inline4 toyotas are the same way round tho(to the best of my knolage) and they have been around alot longer then FWD cars.. so the way they turned the motor was desided by the engins befourhand not the engines fot the cars... talking toyota coz i think some mitzis and i can gues honda(coz there so strange) are the other way round in some of the fwd cars iv seen

the jz engins where designed for the americans so the intake was in the same side as the brake master cylinder,as they drive on the other side,but when they started to produce for the aus and nz market it would have cost to much to change the head round so just left it as is.

im pretty sure it just a matter of whatever goes , however they feel like packaging the engine etc. if you hunt around enough you'll find examples of them being both ways for no particular reason.

I agree, and I'm fairly confident that 1JZs were not sent to the US market, they didn't get JZA70s or anything like that, only G/MA70.

They probably just do it that way around because AFAIK they always have, and why change the basic layout of the engine if you're putting it into a chassis thats already in production?

OT but the new holden epica has a TRANSVERSE straight 6. That has got to suck to work on...

intake at the front exhaust at the back a jumbble of 6 pistons in the middle somewhere 2 cams 12 valves and one head .
