port/polish intake
lightened and balanced rotating assembly
bumped cams
tuned length exhaust headers, catback exhaust
aftermarket haltech ECU and tune specific to each car
adjustable ride-height coil over suspension
big brake kit
light racing alloys with nice grippy tyres

ever wonder why they so hard to run from?

Are you for real? Is this what your mates's dad's brother's mate who knows an apprentice who knows a mechanic who works at a dealership that services cop cars said?
Al is more on the money, they do get a hell of a hard life, though they do get reguarly serviced.

lol there was a thread on another forum somewhere about how hard these things get abused.
and also the quality of a lot of the wiring installation for all the radios and lights and shit was very dubious. known to often have electrical issuesas when its all removed it done pretty rugged.

if anything they might get the standard shocks and brakes out of a higher specced model , but i doubt its all of them, as i can see them thinking the stock stuff adequate for the job.

dude id never buy an ex cop car, like every one has said they get trashed every day of the week, plus ive also heard about the wireing issues, they will get regulary serviced but even that wont save a car from a life time of tourture.

viewtopic.php?t=59248

that post had a discussion mixed in it about what if anything is done to some of the cop cars...if you can read through all the other stuffs

If I wanted that sort of car I'd consider. Are generally an ok price, just know its not a 1 old lady owner (as half the cars around apparantly are)
Cant believe im still a member here.

They may be on a regular maintenance schedule, but they arent maintained to anywhere near the level they should be. These are effectlvely race cars for the road and are constantly in close proximity to unprotected bystanders.
I spent 40 hours in various police cars recently and all had been beaten to within an inch of thier lives. The engines and tranmissions all performed well. But suspension and brakes (the bits that really matter) were well below par. I would have thought the cops would have reported these cars and ensured they were well serviced. However most have little mechanical knoledge and it would appear that 70% of the fleet would be off the road if they were maintained as they should.
The answer is Helmholtz!

usual standard upgrades used to be fe2 suspension (holdens "handling pack") and upgraded pads, other than that not a lot...

Indeed, my mate recently bought an ex cop commy and all it had done to it is LPG and later model suspension/brakes (which were of course rooted).

A friend of my dads bought an ex cop car falcon from about 1998 vintage, has run well for ages, he bought it as a cheap horse float car and has been towing horse floats for the last few years since he bought it.

The suspension is a little rolly as to be expected from a car of it's age. The only other problem is the rear diff is real whiny, it's so loud that you can hardly talk when it's moving lol - but still goes

they are standard mate. no mods apart from what my dads mate (old machanic for the police, finished a year or 2 back) told me a "chip" if that car was a lucky one... no mods like stated above.

thats not true, i know when they had falcons they had a huge drama with the brakes on the 7th application from high speed (100kms) you pretty much had on brakes, hence why there was the upgraded brakes to them all,

Do you think cops would take a dim view if you bought an ex undercover commy, made some make believe lights (the ones that sit on the dash and in the back parcel tray) and the extra ariel? Cos i'm sure a cop (or one that looks just like a cop car) that speeds won't get pulled over by another cop right?
