speed limit in school zone?

Postby dougsop » Wed Dec 12, 2007 2:12 pm

I m a driver that hardly goes over the speed limit, this morning I found a ticket laying around in my letter box, so I quickly check where and how fast I was going.
They claim I was doing 58km/h in a 50km/h zone at 13:59 on Hobsonville road, and the reason is that, the scene is close to Hobsonville primary.
I personally agree speed should be kept under 50km/h before and after school, as first is to avoid those kids and secondly those soccer mum. I always thought there is a time frame for cars to keep the speed under 50km/h around the school area. (7-9am 3-4 pm?)
I was all confused as to where I was doing 58km/h legally so I rang the enquiry line. At first I asked the lady if there is a time frame where you have to travel not over 4km/h in the 50 zone near the school, she said yes! “The time frame is normally in the morning before school 7-9am and afternoon after school approx 3-4 pm.” Before I can ask the second question she quickly asked if I got a ticket, I said yes. So she changed her attitude and said there is no time frame as we trying to educate people to always travel 50km/h around the school area regardless of school time or after school.
I pretty doubt the cops will travel 50km/h around the school area 24/7, I personally think this is another way the government is making money, although the fine is not much, just $30, but consider how many cars will travel over 54km/h in those area.
So all of you out there beware, just don’t know where and when they are out there making money out of us, they could be setting camera 12 midnight near school area and expect you to travel not over 54km/h.

Any opinion or thought ?

You think thats bad, I got a ticket for going 56km/h.
$30 fine too, which was annoying to say the least.
By next year here in Hamilton the limit is gonna be lowered to 40km/h.
Personally I do accept that speeding past schools when the kids are arriving or leaving is selfish, but to enforce it when there are in class is bs.

What the hell are you on about?

You do know that the limit is 50.. so 51 is illegal. You were doing 58. And you think you should get out of it because it wasn't around a school start or end time? Are you stupid?

11km/h is more of a rule to follow when traveling at 100km/h and not 50km/h. My general rule is 10% above and then you're asking for trouble.

I would like to add my 2 rubles.
Speedos in the cars are very inaccurate and usually have tolerances of over 10% usually they over read, but I have seen cases where they under read, or with cable driven speedos they would oscillate +/- 5kph on lower speeds. Another problem, is that scale used (especially on those vehicles where the speedo goes over 240kph, and many new ones with fancy stylish dials) makes it very hard to read.
The solution the ambiguity created by hours and what speed limit actually is, is to make it full time 40kph zone with normal 10kph tolerance.
Also it creates another danger - speedo watching, it is much safer to go 50kph than 40kph with eyes constantly on speedo.

Yup, it says it must be issued over 11km/h, it's up to the officer/ticket issuer if it's below it as to if they issue one or not. Speedos tend to be out so thats why they don't ticket between 50-54. Personally I try to stick to the exact posted limit in suburban areas, too many potential accidents waiting to happen and cops/cameras could be lurking anywhere. I don't think it's hard to sit at a constant speed though a lot of New Zealand drivers seem to be lousy at it.

you have to remembe that car speedo's aren't 100% accurate and somecars can be upto 10% out, there has to be some 'buffer zone' to account for this. to those people who believe anything over 50kph should get a ticket, how about you hop in your car with a handheld GPS and find out just how accurate your car's speedo is, i think you'd get a suprise. One of my workmates got a ticket the other day for doing 61 in a 50 zone the car has factory alloys but larger than std profile tyres, think it has 70's instead of 60's on it, and thats enough to throw it out.

I remember seeing this in the news a while ago,
they basically changed the tolerance to no more than 5kph over 50kph

here is the link to the police website, should be all the info you need:

http://www.police.govt.nz/service/road/ ... -kids.html

so basically you wont be getting off your ticket

what about the people who tail gate when you are doing the speed limit
example, your doing 45 past a school, little kid runs out, you brake hard, car tailgating behind you rams you into the kid

I think the problem is bigger than doing 5 to 10kms over the speed limit

i got a ticket in the corolla 55 outside a school .I accepted my bad and paid my 30 bux .My gripe is how come I always get ticketed in slow cars eg the two tickets ive had in the last few years were in 2e corolla and a diesel hiace and not in any of my faster cars , Is this just my bad judgment or do other people find this .

Random question -
Does anyone know those speed radars they have on the side of the road, usually on trailers, with big LED signs that show your speed? Not a camera, just radar to say slow down, etc.

Cause I go past them at 60, it says 50.
So either my speedo way out, or they are inacurate.

They work by radar, so they are pretty accurate.
Im gonna say your speedo needs to be tuned.

Im hoping they're accurate. After I bought my 17's it seems that they've made the speedo pretty much bang on at 50 kph. Not so sure at 100 kph + though
