I don't get it....
Your not going to kill someone by having a radar detector on your dash, and most of the time it's to late by the time your detector goes off...

You're not going to kill someone having a gun on your dash either. My point was that it's not what it does, but the reasons they're used.

Bottom line is, no matter how you rationalize it, the only reason you need a radar detector is to avoid getting caught speeding therefore the device itself is encouragement to speed.

I think that quote from the Beehive site is badly worded, i'm more inclined to believe that notwithstanding the innaccuracy, they're talking about radar detectors and radar/lidar jammers.

Whilst I agree that radar detectors are treated by some as a license-to-speed, from an RF point of view theres nothing currently in law that prevents anyone from receiving anything.

Its the 'acting on what you hear' bit that catches you out - and with a radar detector its almost a garuntee that you're going to react to what you're receiving...

I have a radar detector but I don't speed at all.
Actually i don't know why I have it to be quite honest, i do alot of long trips and always comes in handy especially coming into 50k zones from 100k zones...

I used to speed a bit to be honest, but i find i stick to the speed limit now. I find mine to be most useful at keeping me alert. When it goes off (which is pretty rare these days) it gets me really alert that theres cops around. And for some reason, im more likely to speed in the primera than the SW20? I guess its because the SW20 actually takes effort to drive.

I find eyeballs help much more to alert me to changes of speed limits. Can't see how having a radar detector would read speed limit (or other) signs for me.

What about the likes of Radar Direct and other businesses? This is going to hurt them.. Some people have payed a lot of money for a quality detector, it is their's to use how they see fit.

The NZ market is not big enough to really hurt any big brand word brands imo. However, I doubt thats a government concern. Cigarette companies probably got hurt by having to tell their consumers that they were killing them, yet they still had to.
You are right some people have paid a lot of money, and thats bad luck I guess.
Looking around the shops the other day, If I was a radar detector man, I would be more upset no retailers are telling their customers of the possible change next year (although not surprised obvously)

Every law change/update is bound to upset a small group of people.

But when it's something that is harming/killing people I agree that banning it is a good thing.
I don't see how not having a radar detector is going to save peoples lives, people will still speed regardless, just means that the police will be able to net more revenue...

no detector = caught more
cuaght more = your off the road

while i still reckon the "speed kills" campaign is flawed. i have always wondered why they allowed you to own a device that helps you get away with breaking the law.

But you know the thing is it's almost like reverse phycology, they say not to do something, those morons will go out and do it. Telling them not to have radar detectors aren't going to stop many people, they will hide them and what not.

Only smart morons will have the ability to hide them/make stealth. Run of the mill morons will just leave as is and get the fine.

Errrr, anyone else notice that a speed detection device would be a radar gun like the police use? Since they use it to detect how fast we are going? Or even those signs on the side of the road that tell you how fast you're going.....

So, they're introducing a law to ban radar guns? Govt. self ownage....

the reaon for the added harshness is its proven that fines dont matter a shit to the hardcore wankers who keep breaking the law
so they make it easier to loose the license
if the keep driving without a license its easier to do things like stick em in jail for a month etc.

as for a loud exhaust, its a major issue with the general public that focus's unwanted hate against our hobby.
take away that major gripe and a lot of the anti car enthusiast feelings go away... im all for it. they only wantto ban the arrogantly loud and offensive exhausts. i reckon even if your car was a little over the standards it wouldnt be a problem, untill you pull 6000rpm in first in the main street. in which case you deserve what you get

why dont they keep it how it is, and if someone doesn't pay their fines, take their licence, instead of punishing the majority with un thought through laws.

impound their cars next time they get pulled over, not give out stupid amounts of demerits for non-dangerous things.

fines mean nothing to rich c**ts. Poor people dont pay and middle class feel the burn as they can pay.

Fines are not universal in affect. demerits are.

As for the beehive quote, as was said somewhere above, it was just worded poorly. we should be able to workout what was actually meant rather than suggesting the police will have to take away their own detectors or that gps wont be allowed etc etc.

As I stated on the first page, people who disagree will bitch to the days end, but no-one actually gets of their arses to try an do anything in the correct manner to voice their concern.

There is no proof having a radar detector encourages speeding.

What's better, a person with a radar who slows down in time because they can, or someone who sees the flashing lights and boots it to try to avoid being caught.

They're both the same - trying to avoid getting caught. Next they'll be saying that any car faster than a popo car is illegal.
