mr2 aw11 headlights!

Postby jonno* » Sun Dec 30, 2007 9:11 pm

Hey guys, just picked up a nice red '89 aw11 today, it's going great apart from one thing. My headlights won't go down on their own - i have to do it manually twisting those little knobs, which gets old pretty fast. I've tried turning the headlights off before I turn the car off, but they still won't go down :/ I'm doing it right according to the manual, so does anybody know any tricks to get these to work?

thanks

the headlight retractor relay has gone by the sound of it

its in the frunk, on your right if your looking into it, little black box, try spraying a bit of crc on the contacts

oh cheers dude, did you mean the fuse box though? there's a little gizmo underneath the reservoir for the windscreen wiper fluid which is also on the right and hooked into the cables coming from the headlights, but the manual talks about the fuse box, and the fuse looks a bit messed up :s

also, pretty noob question haha, but is crc the same as wd40? think the olds took the only can of crc when they went away on the boat, i have this other stuff though, will it do the trick?

not the fuse box, its the little black box in the top right hand corner, to the right of the window washer pump thing

Ah yeah, see what you mean, didn't seem to do the trick though :( I'll take another look at the fuses tomorrow though, see which ones do what, because the one i did take out looked pretty buggered.

edit - revhead - they go up sweet as, just not down, could there be a different thing controlling upwards motors compared to downward? :s

have a good look at the plugs/wiring
i remember that when working on the lights the manual says to remove that relay and they will not come down on your hands!

Haha yeah, mine has two lines of exclamation marks and a massive 'danger' sign where it says that.

Levinguy, I'm in pakuranga, how much would you want for it? Shouldn't be a difference between different years/jap import vs nz new right?

heh, just to clear it up in the end. picked up a new retractor relay, but that didn't seem to solve the problem, so i dug round a little deeper and found a fuse called 'RTR' which was busted, which probably stands for 'retractor relay' or some such i guess, so it oughta work when i replace that.

anybody need an aw11 retractor relay then :P you can have it back if your old one doesn't show up rob!
