AE92 shocks

Postby TRD_ZERO » Sat Jan 05, 2008 10:20 am

OK this might sound like a stupid question but im a little stumped. The front shocks on my ae92 need to be replaced, now how do i go about doing this myself? Or do i have to get it taken in to get the tophat thingy and bottom spring capture thing mounted to the shock. If i buy two new shocks how do i install them in the struts can i do it myself?

rev head can supply new shocks... you will need a spring compressor which you can buy from ripco or rent from a equipment rental place...

ok, if you have to ask its prob not the best to try it your self as there is a few safety concerns
best way would be to get a mate whos done it to teach you as you go.

piss easy!

1) undo bottom shock bolts (19mm)
2) remove brakes
3) undo 3 bolts from top of shock
4) remove

there may be more steps, but currently my brain is functioning on bourbon and a jellytip icecream

as above, pretty easy job that can be done one lazy morning, but if you dont have much of a mechanical apitude def get a mate or just leave with the mechanic to do

I always losened (just loosened) the tophat nut before removing the strut .
From memory on mine had to disconnect brake lines as they go in a bracket welded to it, although I know of others who have just cut a notch in it so they didnt have to - but its a good opportunity to give the brakes a bleed anyway.
Unless you have lowered springs you really do need spring compressors, as Rev says above, some dangers involved potentially. There are other methods with them, but unless someone knows what they ae doing I wont discuss them.
That aside its a basic bolt in/out job. Make sure springs are re-seated in the strut rubbers properly and you are away.
Cant believe im still a member here.

OK i must not have posted properly or you misunderstood me. Taking the strut out is the easy bit. But when i have the strut lying in front of me and i have a new shock lying next to it, how do i get the new shock into that strut i know i need a spring compressor to hold the springs in when taking it apart. Is it as easy as compressing the springs then undoing the tophat bolt taking it off, how does the shock fit into that strut does the old one just slide out and i slide the new one in? It replacing the actual shock that im stumped on. How do i get the old shock out the strut and how do i get the new one in.....Im i missing something? Or do you buy the new strut minus the spring?

did you loosen the main top hat bolt before you removed the strut?
if not you may need to put it all back in to loosen it.....

once you have the spring off (USE SPRING COMPRESSORS!)

what kind of replacment shock have you got?
an insert of the strut? toyota sells the strut so all you have to do is swap the spring and top hat.
but TRD and most aftermarket suppliers will do an insert only so you need to undo the large nut that hold the insert into the strut body. you will need eiter a special tool or a very large cresent to do that
although you could hold the nut in a vice and turn the strut body to do it.

i'm not familiar with ae92 struts, but ae111 are one piece, you just take the spring and top hat and transfer it to the new strut. Are ae92 not one piece??

if they are one piece, take new shocks, old shocks to ya local workshop and ask them nicely to swap the springs / top hats to the new shocks, will take all of 5 minutes and shouldn't cost fark all.

YEah that was the main question i was asking is it two peice or one peice. I havent taken the strut out or even got new shocks yet. It seems it might just be easier getting some one piece shocks and swapping te springs. Sweet thanks for that guys.
