...including Auckland...

Going off topic

It takes me 20 - 25 minutes to drive to work each day into the CBD from where I live - admittedly not a rush hour, but rush hour only adds 5 - 10 minutes for me. That drive cost me about $4/day in petrol (~2.3 L for ~25km round trip), parking provided by my employer.

It would take me probably an hour in each direction to take the bus, door to door.

Guess what? I'd rather drive, and be able to choose when I get to and from work. I'd be happy to provide carpool transport for other people, so long as my irregular schedule isn't an inconvenience to them.

back on-topic:
re: Hiding Radar detectors:
There's a kit for concealing a V1 (you loose the rear and side detection, but keep the boggey counter) using a water-tight enclosure for the V1 for mounting it in the engine grill and cabling to the Remote/concealed Display.

Buy two V1s to retain front and rear detection (but you'd need two concealed displays as well)

re: slow drivers.
the average open road speed is ~95kmph at the moment IIRC.

Since we know there are people who cruise at 110+ kmph, some of whom get ticketed, where are the tickets for the inconsiderate drivers who hold up the traffic? or are these simply not reported?

True, but if you are going less than the posted speed limit, and there are 3 or more cars behind you, you are supposed to pull over...
Read the road code....

So you can complain about people going 80 that dont pull over! :P

Not at the moment they don't. They have to wait for the LTSA to get its buttocks into gear and put out a notice.

There are alot of people out there that have over 100 demerits, get pulled over by police, police find they have over 100 demerits, but there is no notice in the system, so they can't do anything (sometimes they do try to ring the ltsa to get the notice done then and there, but that doesn't often work.

I didn't directly respond at the time as I didn't have anything to prove it.

From http://www.stuff.co.nz/4348091a11.html

Transport Safety Minister Harry Duynhoven said police were required to serve a suspension notice on licence holders who were frequently not living where they said they were.

"These people are highly mobile. They don't live in the same place, they're never at home, or when someone comes knocking on the door, the person answering the door says [about the wanted person], 'no, they moved out months ago', knowing the person from officialdom is trouble," he said.

It was then a matter of officers carrying out routine road policing, stopping motorists, and upon detection instantly issuing and enforcing the suspension notice.

The database that the cops use as a reference for drivers tracks their current demerit count. Counts >100, where the driver has (again) offended, get the license immediately suspended by the cop concerned - as I understand it.

Yeah. I saw that one. Scary.

I think having one of those fitted should be the punishment for repeat offenders, though...

We have that sort of thing in the work cars... all speeds, Gs, route(via GPS co-ords) and a few other things are logged.

We keep a log of who had the cars and when.

It makes it very hard for the MD and CEO to claim that they werent speeding when they got caught running a red and crashing

The topic of public transport is a chicken and egg problem. Public transport is crap because not enough people use it. Not enough people use it because it's crap (inconvenient/inconsistent/unreliable).

But yeah. NZ has the distinct disadvantage of having a large area housing a few people. Most (if not all) public transport systems work because they have a high population density.
Also the NZ mentality is "MY way at MY time for MY purpose". We're a society focused on the individuals rather than on the communities/societies/populations. It's probably never going to change either.
Our best hope is that the government will take one for the team and just make sure things are improved... Oh wait... That will never happen either, because our politicians seem hell bent focused purely on how to get re-elected and not "what's good for the country"... Strange that...

Yeah it does track the current count. But as of 5 months ago (last time I was in a cop car) there must be a flag in the database for supension due to demerits. If its 100 or more, no flag, and during the day they ask comms to ring lsta and ask for it to be processed, otherwise they just leave it. Remember liences are handled by lsta, not the police, they just enforce it.

Yah but whats the period of time between hitting 100 and it being flagged in the database that you're 'wanted for service of suspension letter?'

I'm betting its not more than a few days.

The vast mountain of outstanding drivers license suspensions are all on the cops and their time/ability to enforce. I doubt the backlog is @ the LTSA... the electronic processing of a >100 demerit point count is pretty low-load.

When the police check a drivers license the dispatcher will flag the demerit count to the attention of the officer, especially where its >100. This will factor how the cop treats the driver.

(And having never exceeded 100, I don't know what happens from there..)

I have an idea..

Record how many Police vehicles exceed the speed limit, run red lights, dont stop at stop signs (obviously without thier lights on - where some of the cheeky buggers turn their lights on, go through the red light, then turn them off) and send footage or incidences in to the police and ask for comments from them..

Police are just as bad as us common folk at breaking the law

As for dectectors - someone invent ones that can be integrated into your car audio system. Then they would be undetectable by police and you still get a small amount of protection.

Or be like me, speed to overtake but dont do so excessively and otherwise stick to the limit.. If a cop pulls you over for that then they are a complete $*%#&*%

Problem is, and this has already been said, this may just entice young people to run. I know for one NO police car would catch, let alone keep up with my car. But then i hardly break the limit (i just dont slow down for corners lol)

well I got a letter stating that I was over, and a cop visited my folks place(the last place I had registered with the ltsa at the time) to collect my licience... I was living at the other end of the country, and nothing came of it, my points expired, and they seem to have stopped caring(have had a few tickets since and no mention was made.)
