Brake Machining

Postby solitaire » Mon Jan 14, 2008 11:23 am

Hiya,

Time to do the brakes on my levin and corolla wagon...

Problem is that im skint, was going to replace the discs as i have got a bit of a shudder when braking, but cant really afford 3 pairs of discs.

Anyone know somewhere that i can take the discs to get them machined?

Also do you know if i need to get the drum on the back of the wagon machined or something?

you can take it to pitstop, but last time I asked they want $100ish for a skimp on the front 2 rotors.

You're better off buying new discs.
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

You can get the discs machined at BNT, we got a flywheel done there for something like $30, so it's not too expensive.

talk to the likes of autostop, they usually give some great discounts.
IMO not worth skimming disks.

Usually Toyota rotors only have 1mm of tolerance anyway, so when you skim them they go below minimum thickness.

Oh right... I thought there would of been more tolerance.... This will be the 2nd time they have been machined...Perhaps best to get new discs then?

What about drums? Ok to machine the drums when replacing shoes?

Shouldn't need to be machined unless they're out of round.

Reason i am doing it is that they give a fair bit of shudden when i brake... When the brake is on very lightly i can feel where it touches and where it doesnt....

According to DBA the minimum thickness on the discs of both your cars is 1mm less than the original thickness.

either way discs are so stupidly cheap its just pointless to skim them.
i got a pair when toyota were doing a silly special on them and it was cheaper than some places charge to skim them

worst case, do the fronts now, and then do the backs later. and use the standard pads, aftermarket pads chew them out very quickly.

ok, 2mm on the front and 1mm on the back on the newer car only, 1mm front and rear on the older car.

in any case, 1mm is heaps, they'd have to be pretty screwed for you to need to machine more than that off, in which case, you buy new ones.
