Starting problems in my trueno?! shower me with your wisdom

Postby Jooce » Wed Jan 16, 2008 10:23 pm

Hey guys..

My 1991 Trueno Ae92 wont start in the mornings, a mate of mine checked the battery and alternator with this fan-dangled tool and said that both of them were fine. Its like something is draining the battery overnight. Does anyone know what it could be other than the alternator or battery being rooted? the starter motor works fine it just doesnt have the juice needed to turn over properly and if i try again and again it gets weaker until theres eventually no power at all.

alarms are good at draining batteries.

faulty battery faulty alternator are usual culprits.

if you think your friends tool was fandangled then using a dc clamp meter to look for whats using power when the car is off is probly a bit beyond you
i wouldnt jump to conclusions juntil you've tried the obvious answers first

Check there is no current draw from the battery with key off ad removed, all doors shut etc. Just sounds like something is drawing current or your battery is on its way out.

is the battery ok?
check the engine earths, the main battery earth and the engine earth to chassis.

id also be looking at starter motor as a suspect, common for these to go,
they can be fried and cause heaps of current draw, and when trying to start it often sounds like a flat battery,

More than likely a very tired starter motor,is it a 4AGE with the starter motor under the exhaust manifold?.Starter motors dont like the heat from the exhaust and get very slow .Have the starter checked out.Was the problem on 1 of my Levins.

waste of time sorry,

need a decent load tester that draws a decent amount of current to test a battery.

have you even tried another battery yet? steal one out of another car if you have to.
a half dead battery will appear to show correct voltage until you put enough load on it to draw it down.

an autosparky will suck a lot of money out of you for faultfinding like that as it can take a bit of time.

if the battery isnt the issue then try source a spare starter motor that you know is definately ok and swap it in, quite an easy way to rule it out.

How old is the battery? if you dont know, get a new decent brand heavy duty battery. Two of my previous cars have had this exact problem until i replaced the battery. Batteries just get old and the plates get like, oxidised or something.
